I'm replacing the waterpump on a Johnson 79'Seahorse 50hp tiller. I got a waterpump kit from sierra (not sure if this was a good idea to start with). I just don't think the impeller key they gave me is the right one. The old key and impeller is wrecked as I had to use a hammer and chisel to get it release from the driveshaft.

Here are some pics. Tell me what you think. Wrong kit? Everything else is the correct part

old crap

Andy....the original pump kit PN for your engine was 390770 and was superceded by pump kit PN 439077. Don't think that impeller and key will work. The rest looks OK from the pics but can't be sure.

Been kinda lookin' around a little Andy.....seems all the original part number kits went to 439077...up to 85' at least. Could be the wrong impeller and key was added to the kit???? I'd like to have a service manual right now......a few of them....LOL. I'll take a look tomorrow at the shop.

Re: 79' 50hp tiller waterpump woes

Thanks OBJ-
I did some investigating myself. Sierra has two kits for the 50hp for the 79 50hp. 18-3380(waterpump w/out housing) and 18-3378(waterpump w/housing). Now for 18-3380 the cross-reference O.E.M # is 390770 (i.e. the part # on the BRP website). Sierra's parts lists suggests that 18-3880 and 18-3378 are the same set of parts, only that 18-3378 includes the housing.

Let me know what you find. I knew I should have gone with OEM.

Did some looking at the shop Andy, I still come up with the OEM pump kit as 439077 and the Sierra as 18-3378. Not sure what the glich is but it looks like it's in Sierra. The key on your engine is the correct key. The impeller and key in the Sierra kit is not.

Maybe just go get the impeller and key from your local John/Rude dealer?

OBJ-
Yep, I gotta go to the dealer. Now I have to spend extra $$$, oh well. Thanks for looking into it. Do you think I should notify Sierra of the mixup? Wouldn't want this to happen to someone else.

I'd make darn sure they heard about it Andy. Maybe they'll cop on the extra money you have to spend to make the kit work......?? Worth a try.

They apologized and said they would look into it, but didn't offer to cover the difference. I can return the old/new kit though, so we are only talking $9 extra (I can live with that). I have a new kit waiting for me at the OMC dealer.

Re: 79' 50hp tiller waterpump woes

Get this. I went to the OMC dealer, guess what?....I opened up the kit while I was there and it was still the wrong kit.

The guy working there then remembered that in 79' they change the impeller and impeller key. It turns I have a 78' or older geargase on the motor. He went into the back room and did some digging around. He came out with OMC classic Red/white/blue box with the right kit. The kit was abou $8 more than the other but I felt lucky to have it all. The guy was really helpful.

Thanks for all the help.
