I have a 140hp johnson outboard not sure of year, i bought it from a friend of a friend who states its numerous years. The problem i am having is the engine will not idle, it keeps sneezing and stalls abruptly. I rebuilt both carbs, i put to new t-stats in(never again its a bubbleback) new plugs and wires, new fuel lines checked fuel pump and sparks all seems good. The engine runs great at high speed but stalls as soon as it pulled back.

Re: still sneezing

when you say you rebuild both carbs what exactly did you do?

did you set the float level?
installed new needle and seat.
did you check the bowl for warpage?
did you replace the core plug and look for crud?
did you spray carb cleaner threu all passages and blow out with air compressor?

make shure the carbs are realy not the isseu.
check all fuel hoses including the fuel conectors for taking in air.

what plugs are you using and what octane rating of gas?
at what rpm range stalls the engine?

make shure link and sync is correct.

it sound like you are running lean.
do not run the engine until the sneezing problem is solved.
pistons and bearings dont like lean conditions.

good luck

Re: still sneezing

The engine seems to stall around 1200-1500. Iwas using ngk plugs that where in it when purchased but after reading here i purchased the champian UL77V but the engine ran alot worse i couldn,t give it any gas while under load with these plugs, so i'm back to ngk's. I noticed the carb fuel lines only had tie wrap on the so thats all i used should i use hose clamps? I rebuilt the carbs with the kits and replaced all applical parts float, needle, o ring ect. I did clean with carb cleaner 3 full cans and blew all out with compesser. My biggest problem is don't know exactly what engine it is:
on the port sde is--Model# E115TLCTE
SERIAL# JO281241
Which i gathered to be an Evinrude 1983 115hp
But
The person i purchased from said its a 140hp and said its pot luck year (diff year parts)
is there anywhere on the block with diff #'S?

There is a place on the block where you can find the model number - I can't tell you off hand - and I can't go look at it right now because it's put away for the winter, it's been so long since I found it on mine.

I had a chronic sneeze/stall issue and it turned out to be an air leak. It is an '83 (pre VRO) but when it was rebuilt in the mid-90s they used a modern VRO fuel pump, but with the oil inlets plugged. The plugs were rubber caps attached with nylon ties, like is often used on fuel line. The caps had cracked causing a sneaky air leak. I replaced them and the sneezing went away. That's something you might check, since you say it's a multi-year parts kind of deal. You might miss it even if you'd replaced the fuel lines.

But the classic cause, I've been told, is a dirty carb. Sometimes you have to dissassemble completely and soak in liquid carb. cleaner as opposed to blowing it out with spray type.

Re: still sneezing

There should be a large welch plug on the block Mike. The model and serial number would be on the plug.

Compression good on the engine? Spark good?

Re: still sneezing

if you are indeed running lean the fuel air mixture is incorect.
the fuel/air mixture will create to much heat inside the combustion chamber.
it will get so hot it will lead to detonation/pre ignition and ultimatly cause severe engine damage.

hotter plugs (ngk) are not adviseble.

if you are shure the carbs are spik and span
and there is no air leaking into the fuel system,
check the compression or do a leak down test.

remember in order to get the engine to work:

- fuel/air mixture(intake)
- compresion (combustion chamber, crankcase)
- ignition/spark under compression or 7/16 jump

good luck

Re: still sneezing

as joe reeves advises run a small wire thru the orifices in the carb, then blow out. soaking for 24 hours.

Re: still sneezing

i used regular tie wraps on the fuel line. I was told today that could be my problem, that omc makes special ties. Couls that do it?
