hey guys,
i have a 1975 evinrude 40hp out-board.
when ever i run it at home in a tub or with the ear muffs it runs fine at idle and at half throttle.when i launch it and go to take off it coughs and splatters at full throttle, like its out of fuel,if i back off the throttle it still has the prblem .i have changed the fuel, cleaned the filter and changed the tanks.i have replaced the coils and that fixed the problem for five minutes and the same problem keeps occuring. i have just found a small water leak in the head gasket which im in the process of fixing,it has no water getting to the spark plugs to foul them. :) :)

It sounds like a fuel problem,
I'd be cleaning the carb and putting a new set of gaskets and new float into it.
Then give it a proper tune up, link and sync, etc....

RJ, I had a similar problem. I cleaned the carb and still waiting for open water. If that does the trick it is a simple fix. If not I'll follow your postings for any other solutions.
