Hi,
I haven't started working on the impeller job, yet.
Just reading up on the work to be done.
On my 1988 Evinrude 14 SPL Mod No. VE14RCCS,
How do I get the lower Unit off from the motor?

The where's the shift rod connector at?
On a older motor there was a small plate, that you took off, and unscrew two set screws.
And should I shift to the motor to forward gear
before I start taking the lower unit off?
Thanks

Re: Lower Unit

Take off the water intake screens in front of the prop. In there you will find a coupling. Undo the coupling and push the top nut up. Remove the nylon keeper and then you can remove the lower unit.

Re: Lower Unit

i think your motor is based on the 9.9 15 platform
assuming i am right there are six bolts that hold gearcase on remove them pull down on gearcase and you should be able to access the shift rod connector
note have throttle at idle so shift can move to ease disassembly

Yep...what MM1 said. The 14 is a little oddball critter. There are four bolts and one stud nut that hold the lower unit to the midsection. The shift rod coupler will be to the rear of the water pump. Having the engine in reverse will help get you room to remove the coupler bolt.
