Hey guys, doing a waterpump on a friends 2000 150hp Johnson this weekend. Took a quick look at it last weekend, just to see what the shift rod looked like, looked a little bit tight behind the carbs. Any tips on making it easier to release the shift rod on this particular year, like putting in reverse or forward first? Any tool tricks to get in there? Just don't want to have to pull any carbs to get in there.

Thanks, Mike.

Yep, split the pan. 2 bolts in front, 2 bolts in back. Then pull off the port side. Everything will be easy from there

On the 60* it unhooks on the starboard side I believe. There is a pin to pull and then you push the shift to the port side and that disconnects the shift rod. It is easier if you pull the starboard pan.

Thanks guys, I will split the pan and I'm sure it will pretty self explanatory after that. Does it make it any easier if you have it in forward or reverse on this particular engine, I know some it does. Thanks again.

It'll be obvious when you pull that pin and try to push the shift lever to the port side. It gets kinda tight in there with the carb. It's a lot easier to get the shift cable off and out of the way.

Dhadley, are you saying that I should pull the entire shift cable off in order to release the shift rod, or just pull the pin and push the shift lever out of the way, towards the port side? Thanks.

It's easier to get the cable out of the way especially if you're going to pop the pan off. You can do it without but it might be easier.

You don't have to remove the whole motor pan, just the plate on the stb. side and the bolt and retainer that holds both cables. Use the shift cable housing and pull on it while spinning the prop to shift into forward. Then you can remove the hitch pin and push the linkage to port to release the shift shaft.

There is a measurement for the shift shaft, so refer to a service manual before re-installing the gearcase.

Thanks seahorse. Why do I have to spin the prop to put it in forward, can't I just shift into forward and then remove the hitch pin? Also I don't have a manual for this motor as it's not mine, if I just don't move the shift shaft won't it stay adjusted properly, or will I have to move it to get it out? All of my engines, it stays pretty much the same as it was when I took it out, as long as I'm careful not to spin it, and mark it's position. I have done some before where it's been easier to have it in forward or reverse, but I just shift into gear and then remove it. Are you saying to remove the cables first and then shift the linkage manually into forward? Thanks.
