How do I measure the shaft to determine if it is a short shaft or long shaft? Thank you.

measure form the where the motor sits on the transom down to the cavitation plate. the distance should be relatively equal to the distance from the top of the transom to the bottom of the hull. post your measurements.

The lower unit isn't on a motor. Should I measure from the top of the shaft to the top of the impeller housing, or from the top of the shaft to the bottom of the impeller housing.

Sure, what is that measurement to the bottom of the impeller housing?

If it is about 17" it is short shaft, called 15" midsection or exhaust housing.

If it is about 22" it is long shaft, called 20" midsection or exhaust housing.
