I have a 1976 55 HP Evinrude and I have a short somewhere in the Stator or the wires that go into the flywheel.

I have tracked it down to the wires that come off the powerpack ---White/Black and Black/White. Can someone tell me what these wires do? (Control the advance on the spark or the kill?)

When I advance the throttle it shocks me through the key and the engine either runs rough or it kills.

ANYWAY, I am trying to get the flywheel nut off and purchased a large bar and everything from Sears, But I still can't get the nut off. It looks like the nut has never been off the flywheel since 1976 and simply won't budge.

What is the best way to brace the flywheel while I try to "break" it free from those veterans out there??

I might also add that I have added a gallon of SEAFOAM deep creeper to the top to loosen it as well and let it sit overnight to no avail.

Any help is appreciated.

Thank,

Peter

A flywheel holder or good strap wrench may work. On the other hand, when I get one like that, I hook up the electric impact wrench from sears and off she comes.

The two wires you posted are, I believe, the power leads to the power pack.

This works for me, maybe it will help.

I set a grade 8 (hard steel) bolt in one of the outer holes in the top of the flywheel.

I use my breaker bar on the socket at the flywheel nut.

I have a 20" screwdriver that I use to cross the socket and place the tip against the bolt.

By pulling the driver handle and the breaker bar together, I have been able to remove every flywheel nut that I have ever tried.

I have not damaged a flywheel doing this.

I use the same arrangement but with my torque wrench to retighten the nut.

Yep, a strap wrench (www.harborfreight.com) and a long-a*s breaker bar or torque wrench.

If you're doing it on the water, tie a line to the wrenches. When it comes loose, you'll soil yourself.

Next question: Pulling off the flywheel. :)

Yep...DHP is right. Brown is power to the pack. Wiring diagrams are wonderful things..... :)

Taking the flywheel nut off is a breeze with a pneumatic impact wrench.

if you dont have one, any auto repair will zip it off for you for free ,as they have no interest in fixing it
