I have a 78 Johnson 200 and I tried a spark test and I am not getting any spark, I have new power packs and even tried the old ones, I tried disconnecting the wire on #6 on the power pack to test the keyswitch and still no spark. Can I rest the ignition coils with a voltmeter to see if they are good or what would be the next step?

When you tested for spark were all of the plugs out?

[Edit] The tester they sell here is good, and if you look at it you may see how you could make something similar. Spark Plug Tester

Did you make sure your safety cutoff switch is on?

Ezeke - All the plugs were in, but all wires were pulled I used http://www.kd-tools.com/27562757.htm to test the spark (2757)

emdsapmgr - How do I test the stator?

Bill Putter - Are you talking about the switch that has a laynard that attaches to your person, if so this boat doesn't have one.

Steven, try testing for spark with all of the plugs out. You need to get to 300 RPM to get fire and the motor can do that with no plugs in even with a weak battery. If you do that and get no fire, then we can move on.

The black and yellow wire is the one to disconnect on the power pack for that test. I don't know if it is number 6 or not. My wiring diagrams are in the basement.

Re: 1978 Johnson 200 no spark

I built a spark tester similar to the one ezeke is talking about and removed the plugs and I am getting steady arcs on all 6 cylinders, I decided since I had the time to clean the carbs, I took apart the top carb and it is gunked up, so hopefully after all the carbs are cleaned it will run again. Thanks guys for the help.

Thanks for getting back on the results, I think it helps everyone to see how important the battery is for these ignition systems.

I got all the carbs cleaned, and they were all gunked up, put all back together, and started right up. Thanks for the help

Good going, Steven. Now, if you aren't going to be using that tester you made for a while, well...
