fuel filter/starvation?

1993 johnson 60 hp. J60TLETD. Motor dies out after idling for a few minutes. Sounds like fuel starvation. Primer bulb goes soft. After pumping primer bulb back up, starts fine. I looked at fuel filter and after squeezing bulb, saw fuel level drop back to nil. bulb goes soft. I checked fuel lines and connections but no leaks. Replaced bulb, but now fuel not flowing up into filter very well. When I can squeeze it into filter, level immediately drops down to nil. question: when you squeeze bulb, should fuel visibly fill filter and stay or is suppose to bleed back into fuel line? Second question: what do I do now? Replace all fuel line back to tank?

Thanks in advance.

P.s. I SEARCHED for an answer before posting, but didn't have much luck.

Are you sure you have the primer bulb facing the correct direction with the arrow toward the motor connection? Fuel pump or leak would be next thought...

Re: fuel filter/starvation?

bulb is in correct position. when i pumped fuel up into fuel filter, it filled up, but then drained back out. is the fuel suppose to fill the filter and stay visible in the filter?

i took off the top fuel line above the fuel filter, pumped up bulb, then watched the fuel again leave the filter and I guess travel back into fuel supply line.

just not sure what to do next...the fuel must be traveling backwards towards the gas tank, right? i see no leaks anywhere in the fuel line.

our bulb has an arrows on it. the arrow should point toward the engine. a common mistake.

Try the bulb with the arrow vertical (not flat).

i'll try moving the bulb around, as well as vertically. when the system is primed, should fuel fill the filter and then stay in the filter, or will it immediately begin flowing backwards out of the filter and into the fuel supply line?

Re: fuel filter/starvation?

If the bulb will not hold pressure in the line, most likely it is defective. Is this an OMC bulb or the tempo brand? Best to use OMC bulbs for the money. Others are notorious for having bad check valves in them and allowing the problems you describe...BTW- Fuel should flow and stay in the inline filter and bulb should stay hard after you pump it up, until you hit the choke to shoot fuel into the cylinders when cold starting....

alright, i'll get an OMC primer bulb and try that. I may go ahead and replace the fuel line as well.

one question, I live in Lexington, Kentucky. Where can I get an OMC bulb here in town? any autoparts stores carry OMC?

replaced fuel line and bulb with OMC. pumps and holds pressure as well as in fuel filter. ran it on the muffs for awhile and all seems well. gotta get it on the water for the real test, but thanks to all; especially rickdb1boat. this site is one in a million!

:)
