Hi!
My 1963 Evinriude BigTwin is in dire need of a new propeller. Is it possible to get a more efficient and newer design prop than the cone shaped prop that was originally fitted. I have to admit that I know very little about props and thier design. On newer models of outboard engines there appears to have been a move towards cylinderical shaped props, as is shown at the bottom of this page, and I was wondering if I can upgrade my prop and perhaps improve the performance.
Im sure that there are a far more clever folk out there that can, hopefully, give me some advice.
Regards
Tich
:)

Re: BigTwin prop

try scraping on that number or splash a little paint remover on it. I can't find anything for that number.

quite a few choices anyway, there are some NOS bi ear type on e-bay and there are even a few mighigan 4 blades still made for them, what hp/length/weight/type of boat are you trying to prop?

Re: BigTwin prop

That almost sounds like an old Michigan Wheel number. Perhaps AJY-67 or something similair? Unfortunately, I don't have a listing of the old MW prop numbers though.

Re: BigTwin prop

Some of the older Michigan Props had additional numbers on the sides between the blades.

Re: BigTwin prop

The cylindrical shaped props you mention are for later model engines with thru-hub exhaust. Yours dumps the exhaust other than through the prop hub. It's a major design difference in engines.

Re: BigTwin prop

Thanks Gents for your help.
I have looked again at the number on the prop and there are two nembers on the main body of the prop. The one I have already mentioned still looks to be BJY67 (because of my eyes are not as good as they were 50 or so years ago I have asked others to check it) The number on the other side is again is a little worn but appears to be 12681.
A bit more info about the engine if it will help, its a 40hp BigTwin, serial number C98405, model number 40402S.
Truely gratefull for your help.
Regards
Tich
P.S. Thanks BoatBouy. I now,at least, know the reason for the different shaped props. :D

Re: BigTwin prop

As of April 26, 2006. I was looking at newly listed items (on ebay) and there are a number of props for those old motors. I have a 1961 Johnson 40 Hp Bigtwin myself. You could get a prop for as little as $26.00 US on ebay plus shipping. Good luck on your search.
