Hi all,

Have been reading the posts and foud some very usefull info. But I have an Issue with no charging to my battery. I have ordered a manual but have been waiting for almost a week and this is the only hold back from taking the kids out for a little run this week end. Can anyone give me som direction on how to trouble shoot this issue. I am not sure if the Wiring on the motor is correct I am not sure they are correct but cannot confirm. From Left to Right Screws 1-10 the wire colors.
3. Also the gauges (ie Battery and fuel) work but no Tach when motor is running any help would be great. Thanks
Brad

Check the voltage on the gray wire to the tach, it should be around 9 volts. If not, you have a problem with the charging system, or wiring. That engine has a battery CD ignition system, and hydro-electric shift. I would wait for the manual before changing any wires' around, or doing any trouble shooting. This engine can be confusing if you are not familure with it.

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

Have you ever hooked your battery up backwards even for a second? If so you may have blown the rectifier. It does't tolerate reverse polarities
even for a split second.

There is a way to test them with an ohm meter.

This is a post from Member Joe Reeves on how to test the rectifier:

(Small Rectifier Test)
(J. Reeves)

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier. Note that a rectifier will not tolerate reverse polarity. Simply touching the battery with the cables in the reverse order or hooking up a battery charger backwards will blow the diodes in the rectifier assy immediately.

--------------------
ReevesJ32@aol.com

30+ Years With OMC

Not to beat the subject to death, but if the issue is the charging of the battery, deal with that:

Put a voltmeter on the battery with the engine off and take a reading.

Put the voltmeter on the battery with the motor running and take a reading.

If the voltage increased with the motor running, the rectifier is satisfying its primary function.

You can easily set up a voltage gauge to do this so that you will always know if your charger is working.

I was trying to locate the wiring for your terminal block but mine shows a 12 screw block. What is the model number of your motor, please?

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

Thanks for the replies.

ezeke to your question it is a 12 screw block sorry thought the last 2 on the outsides were just for mounting.

I just got the boat about a month ago and have been getting it ready for this year as far as the battery being hooked up backwards I can only say that the battery that came with the boat was hooked up correctly but compleatly fubar won't even take a charge but I have replaced it with a new on and did hook it up corectly.

I have an Ohm Meter and will test the rectifier and let you all know the result.
Thanks again
Brad

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

My diagram from 1970 115 shows:
Yellow Rectifier to 1.
Grey and Yellow Rectifier to 4.
Yellow and Red Rectifier to 6. [12 Volt positive from battery]
Black Rectifier ground to block.

1 and 2 are crossed
3 and 4 are crossed.
8 and 9 are crossed.

Tach lead is grey connected to 3.

Some rectifiers have no ground wire. Some have 2 solid yellow. Any combination of red or solid red from the rectifier is 12 volts positive from the battery.

Thanks ezeke is that all the wires connected to the block because I have more than that?? I also have Brown, brown green, purple, purple yellow, and green white. Any ideas ????

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

Ahh Ok I tested the rectifier and I get a Higher reading off the red wire than the yellow ones so I asume from the post it is bad. Also My rectifier only has 1 yellow 1 yellow/grey and 1 red wire and from what I gethered from the above posts it should have 4 wires not including ground. The markings on the rectifier are as follows VARO R397 8519

Do I even have the correct one for this motor????

"Some rectifiers have no ground wire. Some have 2 solid yellow. Any combination of red or solid red from the rectifier is 12 volts positive from the battery"

Was that not clear?

The ohm test of the yellow or yellow & grey wires is to confirm that the diodes only allow the voltage to flow one way, which is why you switch the test leads.

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

Any thing from the rectifier with Red on it goes to # 6 on the terminal block. The battery should already be connected to the terminal block. That is one wire and only one wire from the rectifier.

The yellow or yellow and grey wires go to 1 and 4.

If you have a black wire on the rectifier it goes to ground at the engine block. If you don't have a black wire on the rectifier, don't worry about it.

Thanks ezeke I remounted it and now have 12.08 volt at the batery but my dash gauge says 11 so most likly bad guage now if i can get it to run smooth we'll be off to the lake

Re: 1970 115 evinrude Charging Issues

Ok I have deduced that I may have a timing problem can anyone give me the timing settings for this motor and advise on where the adjustment is made. I am guessing it is on the throttle arm somewhere as it looks like a timing advance unit of somesort is attatched to it.

Thanks
Brad
