Hello Everyone,

This is my first post. Here is my problem. Just got boat back from shop with a minor tuneup, plugs, timing, carb sync, and lower end lubed. The other afternoon took boat for spin. Got her out in the lake, and she popped right up on plane and was running about 5500 rpm. Then all of a sudden she cut rpms and started to spit and cough, and shake violently. Shut it down and restarted. Could not go above 2800 rpms. Would shake and miss badly. Cruised back to the dock at low rpms. Learned it was going into slow mode. The funny thing is that it never gave and alarm. Got mech on it, and he is stumped. He performed several tests. Compression good, has spark until 2800 rpms then all cylinders shutdown, until dropped below 2800 rpms. Tested stator, and checked good with meter, disconected temp switches and still no go. unhooked vro and still no go. Unhooked slow mode wire in power pack, and still would not run above 2800 rpms. Fuel is new, and getting plenty of it. Primer bulb stays hard. Forgot to mention I replaced the voltage/rectifier last year. Tach is also very erratic, even with wire directly to stator. Any help would be appreciated. Joe if your out there, your input would be appreciated.

if it goes into SLOW even with the SLOW input wiring disabled I would test the power coil and test the warning alarm diode in the harness and then try another pack, would not be the first one I saw that entered SLOW and would not reset.
but test your chargecoil and trigger coil inputs to make sure they are good and it is in fact going into slow.

The diode was tested and checked ok. Mech also stated that the stator tested good, but tach is giving erractic readings, replaced the voltage reg last year. also noticed some black goo dripping underneath stator, but checked fine. Mech also stated that fast start was not working.

then definatly test the power coil for proper resistance and output voltage, its the orange/blk wires.
but if ya got goo it means the stator is going bad. its the first sign.
you have charge coils for ign, lighting coils for the charghing system and a power coil to power up pack functions.

Good news I hope. Mechanic called CDI tech and was told stator, and power pack were the likely culprits.
Stator was dripping a black goo onto the timer base. Mech said that it was still charging the system though. Parts are on order and should be installed by thursday. Is there anything else that could cause my problems?

One thing to check is the sparkplugs. Any RFI from using the wrong plugs can put the motor into SLOW as can an arc from a cracked coil or a pinhole in a plug wire.

Make sure that motor has Champion QL77JC4 plugs gapped at .030". If there are NGK's or others in it, get rid of them.
