Hey guys, I am having a little problem with my 71 9.5. I took it out for a few runs and I have seemed to isolate the problem its having. First let me say that the motor starts on the first or second pull and usually doesn't need the choke. It idles and cruises fine. When I go to take off is goes fine until it starts plaining out then it seems to sputter and hesitate and after a few seconds (maybe 5-7) it will rev more and plain. I have noticed that the ball on the fuel hose isn't really firm and if I pump it up a few times then go to plain it will go and not hesitate at all.

I was told its an air leak, a bad fuel pump, or a bad head gasket......... What do you guys think?

P.S. It seems to use allot of gas, is this normal for this motor? used 1.5 gallons of gas in less than 2 hours of running and it was 50/50 cruise/idle. (also there are no internal leaks that I can see)

Re: Fuel problem

I agree with the suggestions that it could be an air leak or a failing fuel pump.

It could also be a restriction in the tank vent, fuel pickup or fuel lines.

So Jb how do I go about fixing it, and could it be a head gasket? Someone said it was because it uses allot of fuel? Is that allot of fuel?

Oh, also the fuel tank and hose are new as of this past fall and the tank and hose were only used a few times to start the motor and then drained for winter.

Well lets see, as a general rule, your motor should use approximately. 10% of the HP in gallons per hour at WOT. That would make your motor use 1.5 gallons per hour at Wide Open Throttle. Running your motor for approximately. 2 hours (1 hour at WOT---1 hour idling) and using 1.5 gallons is doing good.

Wow, Thanks Xcusme, that is crazy, I guess I never realized that the little motor would use that much fuel, time to go get a 6 gal tank.

Any idea on where to start with my fuel problem? I was thinking new hose first?

Re: Fuel problem

Ok, new info, I bought a new fuel hose and that only fixed the problem part way. Whats next new fuel pump? Or can I rebuild the old one??

Re: Fuel problem

Do a search with the red search feature as there are numerous posts on how to test a fuel pump. If it is bad for the couple extra bucks buy a new one rather than rebuild. Also, make sure that your tank is vented.
