77 Johson 85hp Shifter wont go into reverse

I can't put the motor into reverse I disconnected the cables on the power head and I can manually do it with the shift rod. The Shifter goes all the way forward fine but it comes to, or just before it comes to neutral it's like it's jamming on something and wont let me go any farther with it.

Try spinning the prop by hand when shifting. The clutch dog may be hanging up on the gear face. Usually when shifting, the engine is running and it will properly mesh gears. What you describe is common when not running.

it wont do it when it's running either I disconnect the cables as well at the power head and it still wont

Was the lower unit off recently? Possible that the shift rod height is incorrect.

With the cables disconnected back there though the shift rod height shouldn't effect it, should it?

i think the problem in in the shifter. open it up. you can't go wrong, if you screw it up, you haven't done any damage, seeing it won't work now. or take it out of the boat and take to a shop.

I'll bet you turned the shift rod (it's threaded on the lower end). The cables don't change unless you moved the trunions. Rotating the shift rod changes its effective length, which moves the neutral point (bad).

WildeOne, I believe tht the swivel at the top is the only adjustment on the shift rod for the 1977 85HP and 115HP.

If you have someone else move the control while you watch the shift rod, you can track it. When the shift rod itself is all of the way down, you are in forwrd. About midway up it is in neutral. When the shift rod is at the top of its travel, you are in reverse.<br /><br />You should have the gearcase filled with high viscosity oil when you are working the gears on this gearcase.

I didn't think having the lower end off would have effected it any, because it worked fine for awhile after it was all put back together.
