1985 with gear oil coming out of the small port hole next to the water intake. I changed the leg oil, ran the engine, then about a week later I noticed the oil coming out.

AND....I'll bet the stuff was a black looking gooey stickey stuff.

Welcome to iboats tww20!

If it was indeed black and gooey, it's just unburnt oil migrating down from the exhaust cavity.

Now...why this happens. Can be various reasons. Too much oil in the fuel mix. Engine running cold. Maybe the compression is down from too much carbon build up...ignition spark not what it should be.

Can you tell us the hp and what maint has been done lately? Usually, this is not a "life threating" thing. But a heavy discharge might be trying to tell you something.

This is a 1985 evinrude,40 hp, this is clean gear case oil coming out of the port hole located just below the water intake. This port hole is about 1/8 inch in size.

Well...wrong on the black gooey stuff.....sometimes things ain't that easy.... :)

Probably the best thing to do is drain the gear lube and do a pressure test on the lower unit. This will tell you if you have a bad seal or oring. If it's leaking that bad, I'd hesitate to run it until I found the problem. Have you drained the gear lube to check for water intrusion?

Re: Evinrude lower leg oil leak

I did a pressure test this morning and a bit of oil started coming out of the water intake. I'm going to reseal the gearcase. I'm having a hard time finding a manual for this unit. In removing the gearcase, disconnecting the linkage is go to be the biggest problem. Not sure where to start?? Thanks for help..

The OEM service manual is your best bet for specific info on your engine. Several companies do reprints. Search up Ken Cook Co., outboard wizard or ishopmarine. All sell reprints....well worth the money and agrevation from guessing.

If we can be of any help, just post.

Re: Evinrude lower leg oil leak

Took the gearcase off and pressure tested. Had bubbles coming from all over. Installed new O/H seal kit. Ready to mount case back on. Question is if there is any sealant that goes between the gearcase and the upper housing mounting surfaces? Thanks in advance..
