1973 6hp evinrude starting trouble

I just got this outboard and I have started it twice. The first time it ran for five minutes and then I couldn't start it again. I discovered that a sparkplug cover was faulty. Once that was replaced it started again and ran for 10 minutes. Now I can't start it again...

I changed the gas to a high octane and added the correct 50:1 ratio. I tested the plugs and they are sparking. Fuel lines look good. The throttle is suspect, not sure where it should be to start the engine. Also, not sure what the dial is on the engine? I understand the choke but is there a kill switch I should check as well?

I'm also getting a black oily substance leaking from the exhaust hole on the back of the shaft. Could that be my problem?

Any info would be appreciated. I'm a total amatuer with motors.

Re: 1973 6hp evinrude starting trouble

AM

Thanks for that link, I did review those FAQ's last night after reviewing one of your other posts...I am going to buy a service manual this week and work my way through the FAQ posts.

I do have a couple more questions. How can I get the flywheel off? I tried unsuccessfully yesterday. How can I spray fuel mix into the carbs? I thought they were under the flywheel?

Hi Rovey,Sounds like you are in over your head.
Don't use high octane fuel it is a waste of money on that engine and is actually more difficult for it to burn.If in good tune it will start and run ok on it but it needs 87 octane.
"Carb" is the carburtor which distributes the gas to the motor. It is on the front of the motor has a round hole with a flat plate inside of it.Ignition parts are under the flywheel.
You need to tackle this in a logical fashion.
(1) Is there good spark on each cylinder? What do the plugs look like?Do you know how to check for spark? If spark checks move on.
(2) To check fuel supply try
to CAREFULLY spray just a little fuel mix into the front of the Carb.(the hole with the plate in it).And see if the motor fires.
If it fires up then you have a fuel supply problem. Most commonly a dirty Carb.Let us know where you are at.

i hope your are running this motor, with a water source. preferable with the bottom on a large drum or garbage can.. if not you have ruined the waterpump impeller and probably other things as well.

SS & TD

I'm a bit over my head with the carburator talk. I'm off to the Library after work to grab a manual.

The fuel line into the engine is new. I replaced the line from the tank to the motor. I also checked the line in the engine. I did have difficulty with spark originally but I rectified that and I got the engine to start it was in water. I ran it for about 10 minutes burning a lot of smoke. Would the engine run for 10 minutes if there was a fuel problem? I killed the motor but then I couldn't get it started again. The spark was there. I will use 87 from now on. I will try the the spray on the carb. If it is the hole I am thinking of, it did look the was a black sunstance seeping out???

I'll let you know how the spray goes.

Thanks

If it ran for 10 minutes and would not start I suspect overheating. If you can't hold your fingers on the head for at least five to eight seconds without burning yourself badly then it is overheating. The black substance I will assume is unburnt fuel/oil mix and is probably normal. Could be missing on a plug. Do a search with the red search feature at the top of the page for a homemade spark tester. I made one and it is handy as a crutch because you can test all cylinders for spark at once. Follow steelspikes advice and let everyone know.

Rovey, make that manual your best friend for a couple of day. read it get familar with whats, what. these really very simple engines. this can be a really fun learning experience. an the pride you have when it is starting the 1 -2 pulling an purring at idle at the dock, while the guys with those $500 mo pmt are grinding away to start theirs. i have a 1955 15 hp evinrude and a 1971 merc 135hp people can't believe how well the run.

Fire & TD

Thanks a ton. I'm absolutley new to this and I'm, learning, trying different things, I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks again, I'm sure I will have future questions.

For instance, I had to order the manual, so I am waiting for it. What is the dial on the front of the engine? I think it has something to do with Idling or gas mixture???? There is the throtte to the right, but on the head of the engine there is a choke, the pull start, and a dial that I can barely read but it looks like it goes from 1-7???

-all

Thanks for all your help. I tried everything again today. I got fire on both cylinders but no luck on running even with spray in the carb. Looks like I'm going to try to disasemble and clean the carb. I'll try and keep you posted.

This is a great site!
