button on control box

1987 johnson 70 hp vro .on the control box right infront of the shifter theres a black button .what is it for

Well there are a lot of different control boxes in use. If its truely a button that can be depressed my guess is its the neutral throttle button. Thats so you can raise the throttle speed without putting the motor in gear. <br />A pic of your box woiuld be great.

thanks for the reply walker sorry no pics .the button does have a little housing around it so you cant push it by accident

Okay. That's probably the safety switch. There is supposed to be a clip that snaps on to the button. Do a search here for "safety lanyard"<br />Your motor should start or run without the clip being attached.

Should not start without the clip attached...I'm sure that's what Walker meant...

im lost it starts hmm no tellin someone might have done a rig job onit .the wiring has definatley been tamperd with .thanks for the input

Probably was disbled within the control box.Those older style safety lanyard button depresser caps were made out of rubber and would stretch out over time causing intermittent grounding of ignition.The new style fork clips are much better.
