Any boat from which one fishes for bass, KHC. :)

The current style in bass boats is a very fast, overpowered, low freeboard, blinged to the hilt glitzorocket.

Features that distinguish current "bass" boats are a front mounted foot controlled troller, pedestal seats, several live wells, in deck storage for enough tackle for a battalion and at least a bazillion horsepower.

blinged to the hilt
JB your not showing your age you said, "blinged". :D

The reason they are over powered ot to get far away and back as fast as possible to show your fish to the judges and then relase said fishes.
Cause there is a time limit! But not a speed limit!

Re: What is a bass boat

A bass boat is a boat that was dreamed up by boat salesmen. These guys were standing around one day waiting for the next fisherman to come in for a 14 foot fishing boat with a 10 horse motor when one of them had the brilliant idea that maybe they should put a big motor on the thing and convince the fishermen that they wouldn't have to get up as early in the morning if they could get out to the old fishin spot quicker.
After the guffaws and laughter died down, the boat was designed, the big motor put on and the salesmen waited. Sales were poor for a while because the only kind of fish you had to go to more than a few spots to try was the Bass fish. Well, nobody liked to eat the dumb bass fish, so nobody wanted the faster boats. Then one of the salesmen got the brilliant idea that maybe they should have a contest to see who could catch the most bass in the quickest amount of time. Well, this idea caught on big time. Soon, all the fishermen had to have a 75 horse boat just to get to the ole fishin hole as quick as Bubba so they could catch enough bass quick enough to throw back in. Of course, then Bubba gets a 125 horse motor and then yada, yada, yada, you get the picture.
I asked a fisherman the other day as he was rinsing off his 250 hp bass boat, "You like owning a boat like this?" He replied, "Not really, but I have to to keep up with everybody else."
So there you have it. Guys spending forty or fifty large on a boat they don't really want to catch fish they don't want to eat.

A salesman's dream.

A bass boat is a hole in the water you pour money into, just like all other boats. Bass boats are just shinier and have more glitter in the gelcoat. They're also pretty useless for anything other than racing around the lake trying to catch fish you wouldn't want to eat, then throwing them back in the water.

You can see lots of videos of bass boats on the weekend. Just go to any of the outdoor channels. They's lotsa bass boats on there.

Once you tune in, y'all can go "fishin' with Bill Dance today!"

Dialog:

My Wife: Now what do you suppose is going to happen next? Will Bill Dance catch another bass, do you think?

Me: Yup.

Re: What is a bass boat

Actually, there is a speed limit in most tournaments. Thank God for that. I used to fish with a guy who believed he was a Jones. It was actually quite fun for me. Cause in five years he owned three bass boats. By the time I quit fishing with him he had a bass boat that went way toooo fast and a truck that was color coordinated with his boat.
All the mean while I had a canoe that had a trolling motor attached to it. And man did I fish out of that thing. Thing is I probably cought more bass out of the canoe than I ever did off of that pretty red stratos with a 225 hp motor hanging off the back.
So a bass boat (canoe) is anything with a trolling motor that can move around easily. Curently my bass boat is a 1981 16' Skeeter Mag that doesn't do very well in choppy water. But it has a trolling motor :D

Re: What is a bass boat

The old fisherman was pottering back in when the salesman said to him, 'I've got a deal for you. Scrap your old ten horse boat, buy several multi- horsepower bass boats, and get others to fish for you'

The fisherman replied,'What do I do then?'

'What would you like to do when you retire?' asked the salesman.

'I'd like to take my grandson fishing,' the old boy replied.

'There ya go,' said the salesman. 'Take my deal, and you can do just that.'

The old fisherman smiled and said,'I do just that already.'

The recent posts are right on. The modern bass boat is a perfect example of conspicuous consumption. I can think of no reason related to fishing for having 200 HP on the back of a 17' boat. Just expensive water toys.

Nothing, it's just the implication that they actually have anything to do with catching bass that seems a little untruthful. :)

Re: What is a bass boat

Seahorses rendition of the history of the bassboat is sorta the way it went. Pretty funny too. The bassboat industry has been driven by the tournament fishing industry for years. Always will be.

I guess I would describe a bassboat as such.

A boat usually fiberglass but sometimes aluminum. The hull design is a compromise between speed, safety and fishability (stability at rest when fishing is key). There is almost always raised casting decks both at the front and rear. There is normally one or more rod lockers for rod storage. The boat will always have an electric trolling motor. The average length of a bassboat is around 18-19 feet. There are smaller and much larger (up to 22 feet) and almost all are run with OB motors (inboards waste valuable rear deck space and storage area). The boat will always be equipped with some sort of electronic fish finding device along with other gadgetry to improve the boat performance or fishermans luck. On average, the price tags on these boats aren't exactly in-line with other types of boats. In other words, for what I get by spending $40,000 on a bassboat, I can get a much larger, nicer runabout, pontoon or just about anything else on the water.
Many bass fisherman treat their boat much like they would a car they had when they were a teenager. They will soup it up and hotrod it to get every last drop of speed out of the boat and spend thousands to do it. That's about it in a nutshell.

1986 Champion 184 Dual console bassboat.
1987 Yamaha ProV 150hp motor.

Re: What is a bass boat

Well after reading all of this I guess I will have to quit fishing for bass out of my catfish boat. I allways figured that if I could catch them I must be doing something right. But come to think of it a 14 foot 40 year old alum. boat with a 34 year old 25 hp tiller steering and a new electric trolling motor (transom mounted) no live wells no rod storage no swivel seats and a portable fish finder ain't much of a bass buggy.
And if I use the 42 year old 5 hp motor it gets worse, I still enjoy catching them when the cats ain't biting and yes sometimes I do keep a few for eating reasons.
Keep on keeping on.
Ray :p

Re: What is a bass boat

Back in 1964 the automakers were not selling enough cars for their taste. One day a young fellow over at Pontiac said hey lets put a huge V-8 engine into a midsized sedan and see what happens. The GTO was created and the Musclecar was born. The next year Ford said, hey we need the market share, lets drop a V-8 into a compact and see what happens. The Mustang was created and the Ponycar was born. For ten years the automakers continued to put bigger more powerful engines into cars and the American youth said it is good. Then the insurance companies got involved and, in less then 10 years, the era of fast, fun American cars was gone. The engineers from Pontiac, Ford, and the other companies that were responsible for the Muscle and Pony cars had nothing to do and decided to go fishing.... The only thing that suprises me is it took them so long to create the Bass boat.
