It's spring loaded to default to forward until it starts.

thanx for the info. any ideas where else to look? i have 275 volts coming out of coil into stator. enough juice to fry my volt meter coming out of the plug wires.... is there a kill switch or an obvious ground i should be looking for? any input would be helpful... thanx again.

I would start with removing, inspecting (under the insulation) and cleaning EVERY wire and connection on that engine. You would be surprised how a wire can look ok outside, and be a green crumbling mess inside. I have a '69 85 hp and had that issue.

Use the red search button and you will find LOTS of info on testing that motors components. Adding the member name Joe Reeves will return lots of great answers. He has posted several great "how to's" on those engines.

Really ought to buy a factory manual too.
