1979 Mercury 115 will not start. We have troubleshooted according to the manual and it appears that the rectifier is bad. Our question is...is there any way to bypass the rectifier to make sure that it is the problem?

Hi Dianna<br />A rectifier turns AC current into DC current. The alternator on your motor produces AC. The electrical components of your motor need DC. You need to replace the rectifier and figure why it went bad to begin with.

Alcan is correct in the description of your rectifier. With that in mind it has nothing to do with your cranking or ignition system and is unlikely to be the cause of your problem.Boil it down.Do you have spark? Are you getting fuel, and I mean clean water free fuel? What is really happening here I doubt has anything to do with your rectifier.
