I recently purchased a Mercury Black Max 175 V6 Outboard (circa 1980 model, not EFI)on a Pride Panther hull. The motor goes very well at speed, but will not pull away from a standing start under load (ie with skier in tow) Have had the carbs checked and cleaned, jets checked, fuel changed, plugs changed leads checked. Can't find the problem.

Help me please you Merc experts out there!

Forgot to mention that. All cylinders tested approx 125 psi +- 5psi.

Is it bogging, or is it slipping?

Gidday 12 footer!. Neither bogging or slipping, the motor splutters and coughs, and eventually pulls out. Once some revs are gained, it flys. The prop is not aggressive and cavitation is not the issue. Pulls out of the water perfectly with no weight on the back.

Hello Muddy Knees;
I think that your problem is that you are putting so much load on the engine to start with that it won't let your engine build up RPM's. There is a fix that the bass fishermen use to get them out of the hole quicker; they ventilate thier prop( nothing more than holes drilled toward the rear of the prop),but this should be done by a prop specilest. This lets exaust enter the prop stream and lets the engine build up RPM's faster once speed builds up water pressure builds up and effectivly seals the holes.
hopes this helps

Howdy, Muddy Knees. I think you are overpropped to pull skiers. You mentioned nothing about rpm, but I would guess that you aren't reaching the top of your operating range, even without the extra load.

Check it out.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

The prop is nothing aggressive, and I would have thought this motor powerful enough to do the job anyway. I have discovered a problem with the carby gaskett, for which I am waiting parts. I will update next week once replaced. Thanks for your assistance all.

Re: Mercury 175 won't pull from standing start

I just experienced this exact problem this weekend. It was only my second time out in the boat and it did exactly as described in this post.

I was up at Bass lake (elevation around 4000).
The engine would start fine, idle fine, but would not come out of the hole without *lots* of effort.

At full throttle, from an idle, the engine would sputter, and half run at around 1800 rpm and eventually die if i kept the throttle full. If I *slowly* (over the course of a minute or more, once for 6 minutes) rolled on the throttle, I could get it to "break through" this bog and take off.

Here is the the thing, the engine was not just "bogging" it sounded as though it was half fouled out. As if maybe one carb was flooding and the other two were ok?

Once the boat would go, it ran like a bat outta hell. One of the most effective ways i found to get it to break out would be to trim the engine all the way up (jsut before it would hit the tilt) and have people sit in the open bow, tilting the motor even more.

Here is the setup:

1987 Mercury 175 black max, oil injected, carbs.
Propeller is a 3 blade 23. Not sure of the diameter.
(Had a four blade 24 on there, did the same thing.)
19 foot Ultra open bow ski boat

I would really appreciate any help. Even just an answer as to what was the problem with the original post's motor.

Thanks for any help!

Re: Mercury 175 won't pull from standing start

So I spoke to a local shop, they said it could possibly be the accelerator pump.

Does this sound plausible?

PS - Is there a reason I am getting no reply? I read through the tips and I *think* I am doing everything right here...
