Re: Mercury 175 won't pull from standing start
I just experienced this exact problem this weekend. It was only my second time out in the boat and it did exactly as described in this post.

I was up at Bass lake (elevation around 4000).
The engine would start fine, idle fine, but would not come out of the hole without *lots* of effort.

At full throttle, from an idle, the engine would sputter, and half run at around 1800 rpm and eventually die if i kept the throttle full. If I *slowly* (over the course of a minute or more, once for 6 minutes) rolled on the throttle, I could get it to "break through" this bog and take off.

Here is the the thing, the engine was not just "bogging" it sounded as though it was half fouled out. As if maybe one carb was flooding and the other two were ok?

Once the boat would go, it ran like a bat outta hell. One of the most effective ways i found to get it to break out would be to trim the engine all the way up (jsut before it would hit the tilt) and have people sit in the open bow, tilting the motor even more.

Here is the setup:

1987 Mercury 175 black max, oil injected, carbs.
Propeller is a 3 blade 23. Not sure of the diameter.
(Had a four blade 24 on there, did the same thing.)
19 foot Ultra open bow ski boat

I would really appreciate any help. Even just an answer as to what was the problem with the original post's motor.

Thanks for any help!
