280 VolvoPenta Outdrive

Just purchased my first V/Penta outdrive. I'm about 90% sure it is a 280 by the original operators manual. It is in a 28' Bayliner Victoria. Planning to repower to a 454 bigblock. Does anyone know it this outdirve will hold up to the extra torque? Plus is this a strong reliable outdrive? I have always been a Mercrusier user and now in a new area I know about 0 on. Thanks for any help!

I just bought my first Volvo, too (not as big as yours). Most of the techs I talked to said the outdrive is "great" and "indestructable." Take that for what it it's worth...

I'm sure I read once that the 290 can take 290hp - not sure if model is 290 because of that? As for being 90% sure it's a 280 - look at the serial number it starts PZ and whatever 2 numbers follow it are the type so if you are right it should be PZ28?

Thanks SeaBear, Outdrive is a 280. I did call VolvoPenta and talked to a factory tech. I suggested that I could use the bigblock, but suggested that a more direct adhearance to proper operating instructions that the outdrive would do just fine. Just don't do any hole shots, long term max RPM, and not jumping wakes to cause the outdrive to come out of the water. Yeah I can imagine this cabin cruiser going airborne!. Thanks for the info......

I have an '86 275 outdrive on an 18' bayliner. It has the chevy 350 inboard attached and I do hole shots and lots of skiing. No problems with the boat and I spoke with a mechanic who said I could put a 350 onto it. I think you'll be fine. (for what its worth) and no, I couldn't imagine a boat that large jumping the wake.

HI !!
I ran a 5ltr EFI on a 270T for 13years an never put a spanner to the leg eccept for oil changes and prop changes !!
I like them that much my newer boat 23.5ft cruiser 2.4ton 270 hp diesel volvopenta duoprop will more than cope !
