I have a 80 model mariner 115 hp that is difficult to start when cold, compression is 142 lbs. when cold, carbs have just been cleaned, plenty of batties , fuel pump is fine, I have even added and electric fuel pump. If I inject carb cleaner or wd 40 into the carbs it will start when cold. Once i start it it's ok and easy to start on its own ...what was the cure on these engines for cold starting?????????????

Flatsman, do you start it when it's tilted up ? If so, you will have to lower motor, then start it. I have a Merc 140 I6 (almost same motor), to start it cold I squeeze bulb 'till it gets hard, then press choke button, a tad of gas and crank it until it goes by itself. If I keep motor tilted...no way in h*** it will start. I had a 135hp I6 also and started it same way.

Val

Re: cold start problems

Inrichen your idle needles 1/8 of a turn on all 3 carbs. That would be counter clockwise.
corm

Re: cold start problems

ok both replies are good ,very good. Now do ya know if the lower carb can have a choke flap added to it---or is there any timing setting that would help it start quicker?????
I owned an older inline 150 hp which i spent a good deal of money on without any improvement on the starting problems. But i think i just love these engines ----keep the ideas coming. All help is most appreciated. :D

Re: cold start problems

It would not be hard to install a Johnson primer system, which uses fuel pump pressure to spray fuel behind carb into the intake.

These engines like alot of fuel to start and theres nothing you can do but choke it and crank it. also try having the throtle open just out of neutral so you can open it up alittle when it fires up.

Re: cold start problems

flatsman if the carbs are dry in the morning the problem may be the antisyphon valve. It keeps the gas there ready for the next start. Just those few drops of gas are all thats needed.

Re: cold start problems

The choke shutter adjustment is critical on the motor as it ony chokes two carbs. When the shutters are closed they should seal fairly well. If not try adj the two screws to get the shutters to close right. If you can't replace them. I have my carb idle set at 1 3/4 open on my L6, it will start trimmed out of the water (embarassing), but the L6 like to be vertical to start. With the ele fuel pump assist you should not have the problem of the fuel evaporing out of the carbs when you shut the motor off due to the residual heat build inside the couling.
corm

Re: cold start problems

well i just ordered the choke shutters for the engine , the old ones wouldn't seal off with out sticking. I am thinking about utilizing the bottom carb by installing a choke shutter assembly on it. what do ya think ?????? ;)

You don't need it. But it would be fun to do.
corm

Re: cold start problems

well, while i was waiting for the carb shutters i hooked up the tach but it wouldn't work. Two days of tracing wires and i found out the 12 volt wire has to be on the tach. I had attached it to the like switch and it worked with the lights on...now ain't i a real genious --hahahaha :)

Is your starter motor in good condition? It might be nacked. ;)
