how do i pull the flywheel?

I have an '86 Mariner 30 hp engine, while running i get a rubbing noise almost, when I bought the engine i thought it was a bad power head- but perfect compression on each cylinder (125lbs) led me to buy anyways. I used the engine almost everyday last summer- and it ran perfect despite the noise.

Well basically I dont think the power head is the problem, sounds like the flywheel is hitting or chaffing something. So how do i pull the flywheel off? I need a puller of some sort, where can I get one? Also any ideas on what to check? Thanks.
-John

you might try to remove the wheel with out a puller --undo the nut on top of the wheel then strike the center bolt sharply but not enough to do damage it should pop loose, if that dosn't work then you will need a puller, you can pick one up at any auto parts store or a marine store --boaters world , boatus or west marine to name a few.I would definatley get a manual for that motor before I did any repairs.

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

I actually work at Boaters World- I havnt really looked to see if we have one in stock, but I dont ever recall seeing a puller on hand- but I do have a Napa down the road, so I will check there.

Problem is, how do I remove the nut? I cant get it loose for the life of me, is it reverse thread? I end up turning the engine over when I try to loosen it- and I dont have access to air tools :( thanks for the help.

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

if you can find a wrench the size of the nut, strike the wrench with a large hammer in CCW rotation.

Lysle makes a good dampner pulley puller that will do the job. I'm sure Napa must carry that line.....

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

Well I will try that, I have all the tools I could ever need so thats not a problem, i dont think the hammer trick will work as it seems really tight on there but i will sure try it.

Seems to me someone said put it in gear and place a 2x4 on the prop and wedge it so the engine cant turn over- and loosen the nut that way-

seems like a good way to ruin a lower unit gear or prop for that matter- so I will just try your hammer method first,

any other ideas?

DO NOT WEDGE the prop....you stand to damage components that way!
The hammering on the wrench works everytime..........be sure to put the box end on the nut! :)

J,
Schematic is right, a hammer on the end of the wrench will work. It is the same theory as an impact wrench. It isn't the single force that moves a bolt, it is the hammering effect. Good luck with your efforts.

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

now when u hit it with a hammer the nut will actually move eventually? I just dont see how the engine doesnt rotate when u strike the wrench- but i will try it. thanks!
-John

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

the heavy mass of the flywheel wants to stay stationary......the wrench doesn't :)

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

It can be really hard to get the nut loose sometimes.

I once had to use the hammer method Scematic suggests too - good, he knows what he is talking about !

I had my brotherinlaw to hold the flywheel with workgloves. Look out for starterdrive and studs at your fingers !. This way you will loosen it, be sure the hammer is big enough, i had to use a 500 g hammar - 1 lbs !

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

The teeth on those flywheels are pretty strong..
they have to be to take sustained hits of the starter on models that don't engage until after the starter is spinning, (anything not that recent will hit spinning).

I have many times used a smallish screwdriver, put its shaft between two of the teeth and wedge the end somewhere solid on the block, (be careful where, as you could damage something.) I use a smallish screwdriver because hopefully it will let go before any damage is done..

anway, wedge you flywheel stationary, stick the socket rachet on the flywheel nut. one hand holds the screwdriver in place, the other hand is used to slam the heel of your palm hard against the rachet (in the correct direction of course.)

Has never failed me, always gotten em off and never did any damage.. the screwdriver could potentially do some damage, but if you are careful it never will. particularly when its only your hand thats making the impact force.

rgds

Frank

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

Hey, I had the same problems you are having with the nut. It would not budge with anything I did. Finally, I tied a rope around the flywheel and wrapped it through the slots on the top. I help the flywheel real tight with the rope, pulling on the opposite direction that the nut had to go, and my dad used a ratchet with a pipe on the end to break it loose. My dad is 52 years old and works out with 250 lb. bench presses, and he had to put a lot of muscle into it! I never imagined a nut on a little 9.5 Evinrude would be that hard to get off!

Brent

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

well i got the nut off using the hammering method schematic told me about, worked great too!

Now i need a gear puller or whatever to get it off. I have one- but im missing the center bolt so I will hafta find that or, again get another puller.

I was out on the lake today and i stoped and the motor wouldnt restart- nothing. Spark and compression was present, and i do belive i have fuel getting there as well, I think that noise under the flywheel i spoke about may have something to do with the sudden no start.

Any other ideas? :)
Thanks
-John

Re: how do i pull the flywheel?

John, the puller you need is called a harmonic balancer puller. You will need to get three proper thread hex head machine screws as well. Available at most larger auto parts stores. You will need something better than the hammer trick to tighten the flywheel nut. Most marine shops have a flywheel holder which engages the ring gear teeth. You can probably cobble up something that will work.
Jim
