94 Sport Jet Rev Limiter Ques

Have a 94 Sea Rayder with Merc Sport Jet 90.<br /><br />Has had several repairs by various mechanics before I purchased it.<br /><br />The black box under the solenoid is the rev limiter, correct?<br /><br />Anyway, the violet wire from the harness is the only wire plugged in to the limiter.<br /><br />The brown wire that leads to the ignition plate area isnt connected to anything.<br /><br />The black/yellow stripe wire is disconnected at the rev limiter box and taped off. It continues on to the ign box.<br /><br />My question is, has my rev limiter box been bypassed. Is the black/yellow stripe wire the kill wire?<br /><br />Thanks, Ken

It certainly sounds like it. I also have a 90 Sport Jet in a Bayliner Reflexx and when I bought it a year ago it was the same way. I got a new rev limiter and wired it correctly. Check www.mercurypartsexpress.com for the correct part number. I would also recommend that you get a manual for the engine. The only one that I have seen is the Clymer - Mercury Sport Jet Shop Manual, they are at dealers and on Amazon.com. The manual has wiring diagrams as well as electrical diagnostic techniques.

Yes, Ken..your rev limiter is bypassed..the blk/yell is the kill wire...had many problems with the original limiters...have changed several times since..new ones much better, have not replaced a new one yet...

Thanks guys, I am getting a manual soon.<br /><br />If the rev limiter is bad, will I get no spark at all, or will it just cut out too early or not at all?<br /><br />What RPM is the rev limiter supposed to cut out at?<br /><br />Ken

The speed limiter cuts in above 5800 rpm and randomly disables a cylinder until the revs drop. When they fail the results are unpredictable, which means, if it runs good without the speed limiter connected and bad when it is connected then replace the limiter.
