My buddy has his pontoon boat moored on beautiful Skaneatles Lake,NY. His mooring cover was totally covered in Gull pooh!! We have tried balls, streamers, etc.Does anyone have a sure fire way to keep "flying rats" off the boats??

Shoot them and give them to the illegal day laborers for dinner, maybe they will aquire a taste for them and help us all with the problem. ;)

I think they make something called Pigeon wire, I see more and more of this stuff on top of gas stations and overhangs on buildlings. You could probally rig something to be removable.

Some people use fake birds of prey, particularly owls. I don't know how well they work in scaring the birds away though.

I had a similar problem. A family of ducks moved in and used my swim platform for their dining room table, and subsequently their outhouse!<br /><br />I took some string, 2 binder clips (black metal clips sold at office supply stores) and about a dozen blank CDs and made a scare device. Drill two holes on opposite sides of the CDs and string them together with a binder clip at either end. Then, hang more CDs from that main sting. The binder clips make for quick installation and removal. The discs spin and shine in the breeze and scare the ducks away. Since building this thing (which my girlfriend dubbed the “Duck Disco Party”), I have not had any poop problems.

A big owl lives in a tree outside my house.<br />The birds just love the guy and doves sit around him all day while smaller birds come and go mostly to peek at him while he is napping but also to chatter away while he just looks at them in a bored way. All within less than 6'away.<br />Me thinks owls are not the answer.

Re: Sea Gulls!!

Seagulls here don't land on fishnet lying on the ground, even with fish in them. Seeing this, many boatowners over here now drape nets over their boats. Seems to work.<br /><br />Another alternative looks like this (edit: like the Gullsweep mentioned in another post below). Seems to work also. However, none of these will help against "fly-by shooting".<br /><br />

I have heard something like what AGS mentioned. Seems to work on bird in the garden but not sure about sea gull as they are a creature of a different breed (nasty thing)!! Short of a 12 gauge, I am not sure what can deter them. :(

Actually a dead gull works the best...<br /><br />That is what airports do - they shoot a goose/gull and leave it at the end of the runway and they avoid that area.<br /><br />IF they have deer they shoot a deer and leave it there...<br /><br />quick search on google showed no dead seagul dolls<br /><br />The other thing would be to throw some food on someone else boat :)<br /><br />tlord

Re: Sea Gulls!!

Here's a couple of things that have worked for myself and my boating friends...<br /><br />1 - Gull Sweep, a device that sits on boat or cover and rotates by wind power...here's a link to one type http://www.foreandaftmarine.com/GULLSWEEP.htm <br /><br />2 - Wind sock - attach to anchor light, works great for my mooring neighbor, all his gulls moved to my boat<br /><br />3 - My counter-attack to above...Nylon string running from bow to stern over full mooring cover with nylon ribbon streamers attached every 12 inches<br /><br />4 - Plastic owl filled with sand placed on swim platform, with additional one (not filled with sand) attached to mooring cover pole or to windshield

Re: Sea Gulls!!

I think it depends on the species of birds and the environment but my $10 plastic owl has worked wonders for 15 years.

Re: Sea Gulls!!

Over here some people smear a very sticky type of stuff on poles or rope and the stuck birds just disappear together with the evidence. A couple of disappearances later one can see a big difference and if a few guys keep this up for maybe three weeks you wont believe that there ever was a problem.

I've used bicarb but to no avail, used netting to no avail, flags nope, streamers nope, dvd discs nope, shooting them is illegal here as they are ptotected.<br />I'm gonna mock up gull sweep see how that goes.<br />I have heard that a dead one placed on the bow is the best way, but who wants to go to their boat with a rotting carcus on the bow after a week

Re: Sea Gulls!!

I drove up in a marina locally a few months ago. There were about 10 or 12 sailboats with plastic bags flying like flags. I didn't know what they were till we asked the bartender at the watering hole. They were the bags that you get with your groceries. Hang them everywhere. Ugly, but very very efficient. I noticed no poop on these boats with the bags. How many rednecks does it take to hang plastic bags on a sailboat?

Dig a hole on the shore two foot square by two feet deep. Cover the bottom of the hole with ashes from a campfire. Sprinkle a can of peas around the top of the hole. Whenever a bird comes to take a pea - kick it in the ash hole!
