My Mariner 50 HP 3 cyc. on a 15 foot Whaler has a high temp alarm problem only at WOT. I have tried all of the ususal stuff, water pump, etc, no luck. My wife ran the boat today and switch fuel tanks to the backup tank that had been filled with with an unknown mixture from the old owners marina. The Temp alarm problem is gone. I've been running premeum OMC 2 cyc oil at 50:1 up until now. Could this have been the problem ? What should I use in this engine? Mercury quicksilver brand?

You hit on a **** good pint there, it's possible to set a friends alarm off using anything less than Penzoil @ 50-1. Other brands at the same ratio give a hotter temp. I can only guess it's cause he rebuilt the motor and it's still pretty tight. Also different oils have a different ash content. Using the wrong oil can be fatal.
If we increase the oil ratio to say 40-1 it goes altogeather! Could this be similar to your problem? I must admit I don't feel comfortable running his boat at 40-1.
Ross

I suspect that you have a problem that is not severe yet but will be unless you solve it. I doubt that it relates to the oil. In any case I would not use the old fuel as it may gum up the carbs whatever the mix. Also suggest that you stick with a brand name oil. Quicksilver, Yammy or OMC TCW3 oil is fine.

I will be switching back to the primary fuel tank today re-fueled with 6 gallons new 87 octane (Shell)and 16 oz OMC brand 2 cyc oil.

OK, if the brand of oil is not the overheating alarm problem, what else could it be. I've replace the water pump, tested the temp sensor, no thermostat in this engine design as far as I can determine from the engine manual. Engine runs great. Very good water flow from the tell-tale. I'm at a dead end.
