The first bit of helpful advice one could give you as a first-time boat owner is to purchase a good service manual for that engine. They are extremely helpful and explain the details of systems such as lubrication, fuel, and cooling. A manual will also help you to know what specific questions to ask on a forum, so you can get the most beneficial answer.

Hope you enjoy your new boat and be careful. :)

Take care, Michaelb

Bigron,
Get a manual, you stated it has oil injection but can not see the oil tank, it maybe that the owner before you removed the oil injection system. I would use premix until you find out and also to insure the oil injection system is working properly. Nothing like having your first motor burnup sure is a bummer. Good luck and enjoy.

the oil tank should be under the engine cowl. You can't see it until you take the cowling off.

Re: mercury oil injected or not ?

G'Day. The 1987 50Hp 4 cyl merc was oil injected with a system called autoblend. Autoblend had one unique feature, It made VRO look good!! most smart owners of autoblend soon removed the oiling system and switched to self mixing 50:1. Merc only ran autoblend for a couple of years and than replaced it with the system that they run today, this system is pretty trouble free. Autoblend was an oil bottle that sat in the boat and connected to the fuel hose. there is no bottle under the cover. If you have an autoblend bottle in the boat then follow the following steps.
1. cut the hose from the motor to the autoblend.
2. fit a fuel inlet fitting to this hose.
3. connect this hose to the fuel tank and rin he motor 50:1
4. take the autoblend bottle and throw it as far as you can
5. Never look at the autoblend again.

I'm sure Ronnie's Marine on SPID will be happy to take care of your motor and answer any questions you have. Oh, by the way, their labor rate is $85/hr. At that price they probably will be nice to you also. Walker
