I been asking for a few months now. I have been useing a 50:1 mix and it has been smokeing and fouling out my plugs I think. I also would like to know where I could get a manuel for a 1963 MERC. 500. I looked in stores and online but couldn't find one. I been looking into some other post and I have been putting one quart per 6 gal. Is this correct????

50:1(1 PINT per 6 Gal. Gas) is correct for your Motor. That should cut down on the smoking! Below you can order a Manual, also. 1st one is for 65 and on though!

Manual
or

Manual2

I try, if I can. I got a little off the path on this one. The post above is for the same as I posted before under "Manual2". So just ignore it if you found the Manual. Good Luck,

Loueq,

I spent a bit of time looking for my OEM shop manual (J140 82), found this site.

Had manual within 10 days. They didn't have the manual listed, I sent them a request, got a response the next day, and had the manual a week later.

They were good about reponding to e-mail when I inquired for the exact ship date. They also use PayPal which I am a fan of.

http://marineengine.com/books_and_engine_manuals/

Hope this helps.

Safe boating to all.

Cheers.

emp.

Rick, You responded to me the other day on my question of my plugs fouling out THANKS. I changed my plugs and did a compression test like you said. I got 80lbs in the first 2 CYL. The other 2 I will test agin tommarow. The shaft of the tester was hitting the CYL. so it wouldn't move I thought it was frozen and I was ready to give up. I'm leading more taward to much oil in the mix. I was putting 1 QT in 6 GAL. The fuel tank said 30 OZ. per 5 GAL. I hope this is what caused my pluge to foul out. I ran about 6 tanks until I had a problem?

If the other 2 are around 80, I would say that's about as good as your going to get, with a Motor that age. Good Luck,

50:1 50 gallons gas to 1 gallon oil. 4 qts. = 1 gallon. 12.5 gallons gas to 1 qt. oil. 6 gallons gas about 16 ounces (or half quart) oil. hope this helps. :D

Rick, The person who sold me the boat said the mix was on the tank. The tank said 30 oz. to 5 gal. I figured that was too much so I put 32 oz for 6 GAL.

Thats about a 25:1 ratio. Seems rich to me for a '63 Motor. Let me dive into some other sites and see what they say.

I had a '67 650, and it ran a 50:1 Mix. That's why I'm a little concerned about your ratio!
Will let you know what I find!

The quality of oil available in '63 wasn't nearly as good as it is today. It needed more oil back then. It also needed new spark plugs every 10 hours. Compared to 25:1 oil from '63, today's oil mixed at 50:1 will give better performance/less smoke/cleaner plugs/longer life/etc. Run the 50:1 mix and have fun.

Oiling rations changed with the introduction of roller bearings instead of inserts. Does that '63 have roller bearings or inserts. If inserts, 24:1 is correct.

c/6

Hooty

Hooty, I don't know the differance between roller bearings and inserts. If I did go to the 50:1 mix, it would probably fix the smoke and plugs fouling out problem that I currently have. Or would the reduction in oil be detrimental rather then bene ;) ficial? Thanks for everyone's input.

Check with your Mercury tech and see when they changed that engine to roller bearings. Again, if it has inserts, 24:1 was the proper gas/oil ratio.

c/6

Hooty

I thought you all were my Tech's. I feel more comfortable with you guys. You're not trying to sell me a new motor. I will call a Merc dealer in the morning. This is another thing they don't have 24hr service. At least not in NJ.
