hey you don't need to worry about the expensive 350+ alternator kits. on my 470, i bought a marine alternator from JC whitney and then went to autozone and picked up a general purpose alternator mounting bracket, attached it to the motor and then added a brace on the otherside of the alternator. it works great and only cost me $150
if you are handy, it is not hard to install yourself.

hey fastpastor,
Could you elaborate on how you do this? I have a 19' 1986 Stingray with the 190 hp 4cyl mercruiser, it has power steering. I looked at this for a couple of minutes and realized i'm no boat mechanic, yet I would like to research and solve this problem myself, as I am pretty self supporting, and fairly broke !!

A $150.00 sounds much better than the $384.00 from the other site.

1. I'm not sure where to mount the alternator, no good place just jumps out at me, it appears the coolant overflow tank would be about the best spot.

2. I assume I may have a water cooled regulator as stated above? Can you provide any info that I should be aware of.

3. Maybe I'm ahead of myself, but I assume my stator is bad, as soon as the boat gets disconnected from the battery, it dies. On full batteries we get almost a full day before we are jumping the motor from another battery. Is there anything else I should be looking at? The motor runs just fine.

Thanks for the advice in advance, as the more i can save on boat repairs, the more time we can spend on the water.
