I went to pick up my boat --- $1500 later & the 1500 lb. tongue jack was on a 45 degree angle and the stanchion that holds the winch was leaning to 1:00 apparently in moving the boat in the yard they ripped the tongue jack almost completely off & in the process twisted the tongue of the trailer. When I asked about the tongue jack and the obvious bend in the tongue of the trailer i was told my boat was on the trailer crooked and that is why there was a bend in the tongue. Bottom line my gut feeling about this a*)^%$e was right.i get it home and run the motor and the telltail was sputtering.I had it to two grand and the pressure on the water jacket was jumping a couple of pounds up and down of eight.Oh and I was told "that I was b$$$$ing to him for a week and that was my last time there"I told him I had made that decision before I even got there. Now I"m 1500 in the hole with an engine with a questionable water pump.I put it on my credit card so he isn't gonna get any money anytime soon..(put it in dispute)Any comments???Suggestions???

Make sure to take pictures of the damage to the trailer before it's repaired, you may need them later.

What Monoshock says ...

Been there.

And write down a diary of events with dates and everything that was said and done, while you still remember it all.
That might be needed later also.

Good point Rod.

Even if you dont come out and say his actual name I'm sure those in the same, and nearby, towns will figure it out from a location description.

Re: Honest mechanic revisited

This is a dealership in New Castle Delaware..In this guys defense....I took the boat for a 3 hour tour and had 19# pressure on the water jacket so for now the work end of this ordeal seems good..Funny thing I bought an new 20 hp Merc from him a couple of years ago 2,000 had other maint.done to the tune of 4,500 total and the guy does this..Doesn't make any sense that you would do this over a tongue jack and changing out a few bolts(he could of straightened my trailer so easily)But his arrogance got the best of him...Ya see as a consumer you aren't suppossed to ask any questions just let him have the motor for a month and wait until he calls in his good time to return it...To be honest I noticed his arrogant nature before but always got what I paid for...until now!!!

Re: Honest mechanic revisited

I'm not defending the dealer but.....Once upon a time a customer picked up his boat after a repair job. About two hours later he showed back up and walked in and began screaming about how we had drilled a three inch hole into the top of his boat for no apparent reason. Cussing up a storm, we were idiots, crooks, sob's, and had ruined his ten year old boat. Since the boat was in for a carb job or some other engine problem I told him that there was no way we would have drilled through the fiberglass. But, I walked outside and took a peak. Sure enough there was this big*** hole up on the bow. Then I walked over and picked up the old cup insert that was laying in his boat and put it in the hole and walked back inside.

Moral of this story. Things are often not as they seem. For a jack and tongue to be bent the yard would have had to jacknife the rig. The person driving the yard tractor would know if they did it and would have no reason not to report the damage to the Manager and have it taken care of before the customer arrived. Straightening the tongue wouldn't cost anything and a jack replacement is cheap. I can't see any business not eating this if they believed it happened in their care. So, it's probably an honest case of "I didn't do it" rather than any attempt by the yard to get out of anything. Some would say that the yard should eat it anyway. But, sometimes, as a business, you just get tired of taking it on the chin.

I've spent tons when we actually screwed something up or because it's the right thing to do. I've also refused to spend a $1.00 when I was convinced that we didn't screw something up. It depends on each dealers moral conviction/business sense as to where they draw the line.

Everybody has a bad day. Maybe a sit down to discuss the issue can get it all straightened out. Pun intended.

I Feel Your Pain!

I Feel Your Pain!

It's sad that this has happened, but there is a silver lining. After having experiences of similar disappointment, I have learned to do maint work on most of my mechanical stuff myself. You can do the same. In my case it's due to my dislike of parting with money, and the amount of time involved with any service work. I can usually have things repaired by my own hand in less time than logistics of repairs by a professional.
I do give up free time that could be used for fishing; however, there is a great sense of accomplishment in doing your own work. Just know your limitations. For me anything that requires measurement with micrometers to repair correctly is off limits. I have no luck repairing diffenentials, or transfer cases.
