what year is this mercury???

Hi everyone i think this the most common question but since i have got a motor with bits and pieces i was wondering if anyone had any imformation on this motor......the serial number is 8045788 by the way its a mercury any imformation i would apreciate

If it's an 85 HP, it looks like a 1977 Model.

thanks rick for your quick reply yes it is a 85 hp .....but is there a list were i can find this engine to make sure its 1977.......once again thanks for the repy

If it's the "XS", check this page out: I can't tell if that says '76 or '78. Maybe it's my old eyes!! Looks like '76 to me though!<br /><br /> web page

once again many thanks for this imformation and your patience......but i still cannot work out how the number on the motor, 8045788 ,is read on this chart........many thanks!
