Mariner 75HP Oil Warning Buzzer

Gentlemen,
I may be interminably thick, but will someone please explain the following for me.

1. The warning horn on the mariner 75Hp is wired via a control box to a temperature sensor and an oil level senser.
2. The control box basically provides the self test 'beep' at startup and the intermittent beeping to indicate oil rather than temperature warning.

3. The oil sensor simply detects when there is less than a pint or so of oil in the tank.

Assuming the above are correct, why does the mariner manual claim that the oil warning buzzer going off could be indicative of an oil pump failure??? There is no wire or sensor on the oil pump and the oil sensor is a simple make/break contact so there is no way it measures the oil flow rate.

There is a very valid reason I ask. My control unit has blown. I have wired the temp sensor directly to the horn and it works. As the control unit is very expensive here in Cape Town I am happy to just check my oil levels regularly.
However, if there IS some way this thing can detect an oil pump problem then it could save me a major rebuild and is worth having, I just can't see how.
The manual BTW is a genuine Mariner/Brunswick one.
Thanks for your time on this.
Cheers

Nick

Hi Nick,
Looks like you have been forgotten about. Such is life. I too have a Mariner 75HP (1996) & on checking the manual find on page 22 info on the warning system. No reference to anything but low oil level indicated by short beeps. My manual is dated 1994. Hope this helps.
Regards,
Peter.

Nickk, you are right, the manual is wrong....there is no way this system can detect a pump failure, only low oil level....and guess what? the later 3 and 4 cylinder merc's like yours do not use that control box.....the sensors are wired directly to the horn, no self test with key-on....
