Gentlemen,
I may be interminably thick, but will someone please explain the following for me.

1. The warning horn on the mariner 75Hp is wired via a control box to a temperature sensor and an oil level senser.
2. The control box basically provides the self test 'beep' at startup and the intermittent beeping to indicate oil rather than temperature warning.

3. The oil sensor simply detects when there is less than a pint or so of oil in the tank.

Assuming the above are correct, why does the mariner manual claim that the oil warning buzzer going off could be indicative of an oil pump failure??? There is no wire or sensor on the oil pump and the oil sensor is a simple make/break contact so there is no way it measures the oil flow rate.

There is a very valid reason I ask. My control unit has blown. I have wired the temp sensor directly to the horn and it works. As the control unit is very expensive here in Cape Town I am happy to just check my oil levels regularly.
However, if there IS some way this thing can detect an oil pump problem then it could save me a major rebuild and is worth having, I just can't see how.
The manual BTW is a genuine Mariner/Brunswick one.
Thanks for your time on this.
Cheers

Nick
