Hi all im new to your board.
I have a 2001 merc 90 2 stroke and the oil pump/valve linkage broke and was (from what I understand) running wide open (default).
I complained about the excessive smoke after a $165 tune up and they said it is ok (twice back to the shop)The plugs were fouling and would not idle. At the time it had lots of oil in the fuel/carb it sat for 30-45 days, then I found the broken linkage. I fixed the linkage and cleaned the plugs somewhat.
I took it to a shop to see how to adjust the linkage and the tech. said it looked like it was real close.
I asked around and I am told several different things, Need a carb job $260, Needs idle adjustment, Just run it and the gas will clean the carbs (varnish).
It is running good wot but it will stall when idling. At the time it had lots of oil in the fuel/carb it sat for 30-45 days.
Are these plugs shot or will they be ok?
I have only run about 10 gal. of fuel since I fixed the linkage, will fuel additive help?
At this time I am thinking that I should replace the plugs add some additive and let it rip!!
Or should I see if the Extended Warranty will take care of everything caused by the broken linkage, i.e. plugs $30, carb job $260, Linkage $6 ?
Do you think there is a chance of ANY damage caused by the oil running wide open for about 20 gal of fuel?
Also my oil tank leaks, they replaced the O ring but I think the neck on the tank it stretched, I was told there was a recall on them.
Thanks for any help you guys can give me.

Re: Carb problem

I'll try. Welcome to the forum, Merc owner.
The newer models had to meet some crazy emmission restrictions, so designers did whatever it took to meet them.
Basicly, all 2 cycle motors smoke, eat plugs in 80 hours or less, and develop carbon.
If it were my engine, I would disconnect all that mix-on-demand stuff, and mix my own. That way, I know what i got. But that's just me, and you might even be running illegal depending upon the laws where you live, if you did so.

You were given the best advice available by your wrench, as far as running the old fuel out.
Additives will help greatly in your situation. Try a decarbon cleaner, such as Ringfree(TM) or Seafoam(TM).
Stabil is an additive that keeps fuel from turning into varnish for about a year....But it also cuts down on performance. 30-45 days in the summer sun, and you surely have varnish.
I've personally had poor results from additives, and therefore, choose to decarbon using a spray type. But again, that is just me, and just about everyone I know has zero problems with additives (never quite understood why).

But my wild guess is by dumping mass quanities of oil into the mix, it quickly built-up a layer of carbon that brillo won't take off.
So by all means ,decarbon it by the meathod you like best. and than,do it again.run it WOT for a while, to blow it out.
The plugs will surely have to be replaced. Under optimum operation conditions, your motor will need plugs in 80 hours or less.Check your manual for exact intervals.
The more you run this engine, the less it will smoke. But remember,it's best to smoke a lot, than to not smoke at all. This smoke is your protection,as awefull as that is on the environment. It's the nature of the 2-cycle beast.
Don't worry about any damage to the motor by running too much oil, outside of carbon buildup, and of course, what it does to marine life.

Re: Carb problem

the mercury oil pump does "default" to maxium oil flow when the linkage rod is off, the oil ratio at max flow is 50-1. mercury factory recommended oil mix when new is, oil injection set up normally and 50-1 mix in the fuel this results in 25-1 at wot. put fresh fuel in the tank ad some ring free and run it.
if engine is under warranty the oil tank should be covered. if warranty has passed ask dealer to call mercury warranty and ask for a special consideration coverage on the tank, the tank have had problems for years.

Re: Carb problem

If they charged 165.00 for a tune up and missed the oil pump linkage, I would look for different dealer. Once the varnish has dried in the carb, fresh fuel will not remove it. I just did a 50hp 3 cylinder that owner said had carbs cleaned at dealer, carbs had not been removed and idle jets were clogged with varnish. I would remove the carbs, clean, link/sync, decarb, fresh plugs.
