Hey everyone, I just found this forum and I have a question.
My nephew has a '86 Merc on a 17ft runabout that we use for fishing. The problem is when we run it at wot it will run good(24mph) for about 5min then it bogges down and will only go about 11mph (we don't have a tach hooked up)
The wierd thing is it only does this with the aluminum prop on. It came with a plastic prop and when we put that on it runs almost too good(it will cavatate if the back end comes up).
We troll with it all day and there no problems, either trolling or afterward on the way back in.
Both props are the same pitch and are the recomended size for this motor.
He took it to a mechanic and he replaced the water pump impeller and said that would fix the problem. Nope! I've checked the compression and all the cylinders are right where they should be according to specs. It starts fine even when cold.
I'm at a loss, I'm good with car engines, but new to 2 cycle motors. could it be the reed valves?
Any help would be great, Thanks in advance!

hmmm, 5? minutes?

Do you have the vent "open" on the tank?
Else, maybe the thermostat.

Will it pick-up again if allowed to cool off for a while?

Try puttin' her on the muffs or in a tank, remove the cowel & Fire her up. Use a Blow-Dryer to heat up the ignition components & coils. Maybe thermal issue in the power pack.

let us know what you find.

There are some guys here that REALLY know Mercs. I'm sure, that with the right info, they'll have you screaming-cross the water in no time

Ok so maybe it's a little more than 5 min more like 15. as far as waiting, does it all day even after it hasn't been run in a while.
I know it's not the fuel tank vent, I always check that.
It doesn't feel hot, but I know that doesn't mean anything so I'll try heating it up.
It only seems to do it under load because it won't do it with muffs on or at the dock. I've also noticed that the plugs are fouled almost every time we come back. We pre-mix the fuel at the recomended 50 to 1. So I'm still not sure.

I'm gonna quess the plugs are fouled because you've been trolling all day. Next time it bogs, try either choking it or pumping the pressurizing bulb. Get back and lettus know what ya found out.

c/6

Hooty

Re: '86 40hp merc bogges at WOT

there is'nt any tach on the boat( we will be putting one in though) but I would have to say 5000 with the plastic prop and maybe 3500 with the metal prop untill it bogs down. my biggest problem is that it's my nephew's boat and I live 500 mi from where he lives. I will be going to where he lives in a couple of weeks so I'm trying to get some ideas to take with me.

Does it bog down or just slow down? Maybe you have a spun prop. just a guess.
I can't even get my own boat to run right.

I am not sure on this but I think the plastic prop even though it is the same pitch as the aluminun one is flexing at speed and acting as a variable pitch (lower pitch at speed) and might explain the difference in rpms on the aluminum prop. Perhaps it needs a different pithc aluminum prop.

I'm thinking the same thing about the plastic prop and if it was a spun prop wouldn't it do this no matter what kind of prop I had on it?
