I've been replacing parts for awhile on this unit, now considering boyessen reeds and an exhaust drill out for smoother run in all ranges.
I ran into an article for 150-175 hp that says drilling out is good, but for 225, unnecessary.
My exhaust is submerged often, low transom, usually under for a moment or two, then carbs load up.

Q Will reeds work? Should i drill out exhaust? or both?
is it worth the dough?

That motor should not load up at idle. I do like the Boyesen reeds but I dont think they will cure an ideling problem.

To take full advantage of an open exhaust you may have have to dry stack the exhaust also.

Good luck!

Just a note here, if you drill out the exhaust, be aware that the noise level can become intolorable.

I ended up closing the drill outs with bolts because I could not even think with noise that came out of my 135HP Merc.

Had to wear ear plugs, which were annoying.

Besides, I could not notice a difference in performance, it just seemed faster with all that noise.

GPS said top speed was the same, 52MPH.

I'm using Boyesen reeds and they DO IMPROVE the idle, midrange and top end considerably...BUT the injection system or carbs MUST be adjusted properly.
