How often do you guys change your water pumps?
ie: I've got an '81 Merc Black Max, only 500 hrs since rebuild, never changed the h20
pump, only plugged it off once....
Q.Could not changing it often on a high output engine cook the top end of the motor, head gasket etc...?
I'm thinking since I'm on my second head gasket leak in 5 yrs, there is connection to my seeing water dripping at high speed... I love you guys
marc in calgary ab.canada

Re: H2O Pump Change Frequency

Howdy, Marcus.

Though many last longer without failure, the water pump impeller should be changed routinely. Some sources say annually, some each 2 years.

Because they are rubber and age whether used or not, engine hours don't matter.

If an aged impeller starts to come apart and plugs parts of your water jacket you have serious trouble.

Good luck. :)

marcus who have a high pressure /low volume type pump , for those type I would change it every year, perferrably in the spring when you run it up for the first time that year then you know the pump is good for the year.
