which grade of fule should i use in my 79 merc 200hp.? 89 octane ? I hear 87 aint fit for your lawnmower, but also heard the new high octane fule will gumm up the pistons due to the additives used in it. can someone school me on fules for my older motor ? thanx in advance :)

87 octane regular. Higher octane only makes the oil companies happy.

Hi octane fuel will not harm your engine, as long as it doesn't have alcohol in it. It will just make your wallet thinner.

Alcohol-free unleaded regular is fine.

I posed a similar question to Merc engineering a while back. Their response was that they have not built a recreational motor in over 30 years that requires any octane higher than 87 (US).

Just keep in mind that with todays fuels the higher the octane the hotter the burn unlike the leaded fuels. High combustion temps are the mortal enemy of a two stroke motor.

Good luck!

Sounds like its best to run middle of the road(89). I have always assumed that even when you put 89 in your only getting 87. Its the gas company's biggest kept secret. ;)

Did I miss something? Did Mercury buy wiseco? Putting 87 in an inline 1500 (made 73-77 and 78&79 if you include the identical 1400)and expecting it to last is like drinking a bottle of $5 tequila and expecting to feel good the next day.
If it was me (and since it's a 2.4 V6) then I'd compression test the motor and if it was 125 or lower I would run 87 in a pinch but run a 50/50 93 and 87 mix for a safety margin. I'd rather give a few bucks to my local rag head gas station than a few hundred or more to wiseco or pro marine. I rarely run all my gas out and the stuff tends to lose octane after two weeks even under ideal storage environments.
