Last summer, I purchased a 1965 Mercury, 50 hp, outboard. This winter, the carboration and ignition systems were professionally rebuilt. I still have trouble starting it. I can't tell whether it's not getting the gas, or whether I am flooding it.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

After trying to start it,(Without actually starting it) pull the plugs and take a look. If they are wet, you are getting fuel to them.

Rick,

We took your advice, and discovered the motor wasn't getting any gas. We then disconnected the fuel line, rotated it 180 degrees, and reconnected it - then the motor started right away.

We are concerned there is something wrong with the fuel line connection to the motor, because the same thing happened a month ago.

Our fuel connector is typically a problem. Do you think there is something wrong with the fuel connector?

Thanks again.

Could very well be a bad fitting going to the motor. More than likely, it's the fitting on the fuel line that connects to the motor that is defective. I would replace the fitting on the fuel line first and see how it does. At leaset you've narrowed it down to a relatively simple problem, which is good.
