I just inherited an old Bayliner boat from my Grandfather. I need a little help identifying the motor and if it needs mixed oil or not. It is a Mercury 650 and it has 4 at the top of the lower unit the serial # 2998660. Any help you could give me I would be very thankful.

AMJ
Your motor is:

650 (65,0) 2997339 = (1971) 4 cyl

Fuel/Oil mixture is 50:1. That's 1 pint of 2- stroke TCW-3 oil to 6 gal gas.

Give us a little more backround on the engine. Been sitting long? Running good last time out? That kinda stuff.

Re: Mercury 65

It has been sitting since 98'. The motor and the boat have always been taken great care of and mantained regurarly. The lower unit was replaced before it was parked and maybe has one run on it. The engine has always ran flawlessy. The reason I really wondered about the mix is because my Grandpa has a little altimers (sp) setting in and told me it doesn't require any oil  . This is the first boat I was ever on and want to besure I take care of it as well as he did. I will be getting a manual here very shortly because this is my first experince with boatmotors. I am very familar with car motors so I hopefull I will be able to catch on to this out board thing pretty easy.

AMJ

Definitely need the oil in the gas. Also, after sitting so long you will wind up having to remove and clean the carbs out, as they will have varnish in them from the old fuel. Also remove any fuel in the tank and flush it out with rubbing alcohol. Use a fresh batch of 50:1 fuel mix when you start the motor. Change lower unit oil, also. Squirt a little WD-40 in the spark plug holes and turn it over by hand using the flywheel to distribute the oil and to check if the cylinders are frozen(rust). Get some new spark plugs. Change the Water Pump impeller(Must Do). The Manual will cover this stuff and if you have any questions along the way, post them here. Engines that sit for a long time require a lot of extra attention before using them again. These are not really suggestions, they are things that must be done if the engine is to run correctly again. There are more..

Check this out, too.

web page

Well got it all ready to run, pump the ball, built a little pressure and found two fuel lines leaking in the motor. Could anyone point me in the right direction to find some replacement ones

Re: Mercury 65

It sort of depends on where its leaking. Best case is that you go to an auto parts store and buy some more fuel line. Take a piece of the old with you and match it up and get some gear clamps.

Worst case is that it leakes at some fittings and that's a little more tricky.

The leaks are a couple of the press style hoses in the motor it self.

Re: Mercury 65

Ok well I got the fuel lines replaced. Went to fire it up and it turned over once then all I got was a click sometimes. Well took the started off and had it checked out, works perfect also had the started solinoid checked out and it wasn't any good. So I replaced the solinoid and still nothing. Is there possibly a safety switch in the motor that might have went out??? I am really at a loss here because it seems to be getting poor to everything that needs it. Except I get no power to the I post when I turn the key, the S post has power.
