Water everywhere !!

This is my first Mercury outboard (Modern) and I've got this water problem.
The motor is a 1991, 75 HP Tiller, 3 cyl.
When running with the muffs in place, I found the tell tale hose plugged and no water coming out at all.
At the same time, there was water rushing out of the lower unit near the shift shaft and from a small round hole in the lower unit casing that's right behind the shift shaft.
I thought that when I unplugged the tell tale hose that the excessiv water would stop and go to where it was supposed to but it's still coming out like a gusher even though the motor is circulating water and has a full force stream at the tell tale.
Could this be a water pump seal or a grommet on the water tube ?
Will it hurt the motor to run it like this until I can get it into a shop ?
It's the walleye opener here in NY. at midnight tonight and most shops are booked solid for a few weeks.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance !!

Re: Water everywhere !!

I don't know anything about merc.s specifically, but for watercooled outboards in general it sounds normal.

45_Red
This situation looks anything but normal !
I've seen a few outboards run with the muffs in place and have never seen a gusher like this.
It sounds logical that there should be some water leaving the cooling system but not by the buckets !!
I'm headed out to take a closer look right now. Hopefully it's nothing drastic .

Thanks.

put it in a bucket and run it. Yours would not be the first I saw that had no water at the tattle tale wile on muffs. Yet was stil working in a bucket or on the water
and about water leaving the system,, Its suposed to leave,,, all of it, fresh in old out, it does not recirculate the water.

Most cooling water ,exits out of the exhaust of your engine and very little at the tell tale. Are you overheating? If not what are you worried about? You will have water shooting out all over the place on the muffs.

I have had all sorts of cooling problems recently.
I had a terrible job to get a marine mechanic to look at it.I done the work myself and put on mufflers. Still the same.
Put it in the water.
Presto.Engine perfect.Try it.

Re: Water everywhere !!

Thaks for the input guys.
I let the motor run with the muffs in place for over 20 minutes and everythung is fine.
There's a steady tream at the tell tale, good flow from the exhaust, no overheating and the motor is running fine.
I'll try it in the lake this afternoon .
Last fall when we took it out of the water for the season, water was coming out from what looked like under the cowl and spewing right over the transom.
The water in the lake went way down and we had to trim the motor way up to keep it from sucking up bottom scum. That's when we noticed the water coming from the cowl area but there's no evidence of that now.
Could it have been from the motor angle and excessive turbulance ??

Anyway, I think it's going to be OK from what I saw yesterday.
Thanks again for you input.
