I am new to boating and have just bought a boat with 1985 merc with electric start no power TT.
Bought a workshop manual which tells me next to nothing about the merc controller. It has a "t" handle which when pushed all the way forward, unlocks the engine so it can be tilted. It also has a black lever along side. 2 questions 1. When in the water and running forward, when you push the T handle forward, what prevents the motor from unlocking in motion when you increase speed ?? And the other lever.. is that a choke ? or is it to be used in conjunction with the handle ? I'm sure there must be an explanation but there is NOTHING in the Clymer manual.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Re: How does Merc Control work ??

Hi Andrew
The big lever is the gear shift and throtle. Push forward, and you get forward gear, keep pushing and you get throtle. The same for reverse only you pull. The small lever is the fast idle/warm-up lever. It is used for starting the motor. With the big lever in neutral lift the warm-up lever. By doing this, it shoud set timing and throtle to the proper position for a sure start. Once started, adjust warm-lever to a comfortable idle for warm-up. when you feel the motor is warm enough return lever to the down position. Then use the big lever to opperate. The small lever only works when the big one is in neutral, and vice versa, The big lever only works when the small lever is in the down position. The thrust of the propeller keeps the motor in the down postion while under way in forward, no need to be locked. If you hit something while under way the motor would swing up, hopefuly creating less damage. You need the motor locked down in neutral to facilitate rope starting, also in reverse, the thrust of the prop is going the other way, this would cause the motor to back itself out of the water.

I cut and pasted this response to your identicle post on "Boat Questions":

The "other" lever is for engine warm up or "idle speed up" when the engine Is NOT in gear. When this lever is up you CANNOT put he engine into gear because of an interlock. Choking the engine is accomplished by pushing the key IN MOMENTARILY while cranking. DO NOT push the key in continuesly or you will flood the engine.

I don't quite understand what you mean about the engine "unlocking in motion". It's supposed to do this in case you hit something submerged so that the engine kicks up instead of breaking the transom off...

Re: How does Merc Control work ??

Thanks for for help.
Just goes to show you that a workshop manual is no substitute for experience from people on these type of sites...
Sorry to post in both areas, as I was unsure of whether it was "Boat" or "Outboard" question.
Really appreciate your help, and I kinda figured it out by looking at my 6hp Suzuki Aux. It doesn't completely lock into position allowing it to kick back if it hits something. So I deducted that when the main motor is travelling forward (Ahead)if it hit a sand bar what would happen ??
It must run unlocked.
Very accurate reply.. What did we all do before the net ????
