87 Mercury 200 BlackMax Reverse grinding

Help. When I put it in reverse it grinds and will not pop in. Forward is fine. I adjusted the shift cable back (pushes shift arm back more) about a half inch. Still have the same problem. More adjusting?

Try to adjust it out or in some more.... Could be a stretched cable.... Keep adjusting until the forward grinds..... If the reverse stills grinds after that, you need new clutch dog/gears......

I tryed shifting by hand and still had the problem. I have since removed the lower unit and taken it to the local "boat machanic." But he is having trouble getting the bearing carrier out :-( Any suggestions? Dynomite? Different machanic? But thanks for the help.
