I have seen several post on this site indicating it
is a high quality oil, so I started using it, & seems to work just fine.. :D

You'll get a variety of opinions on this. If it's rated TCW3, it means it meets at least the minimum requirements. Personnally, I believe if I had a brand new Mercury, I'd use Quicksilver as recommended by the manufacturer. It may or may not be any better than Walmart; I don't know. But if you ever have any problems under warranty, it would be better to be able to say you've used what Mercury recommended. In the scheme of things, oil is a pretty cheap part of boating, anyway. Just my opinion.

Personally, i would check very carefully the warranty clause. It stated, it may say if you use another brand of oil, other than the manufactured suggested brand, it COULD VOID your warranty.. I agree, that you stay with what the manufactured recommends, a few dollars more now will save a whole lot of dollars down the road. Just my thoughts.

No 2 stroke warranties, except on DFI engines, require the use of their overpriced, advertisement inflated oils.

All other 2 stroke warranties, and all other 2 stroke Owner's Manuals will tell you to use TC-W3 rated oil and "suggest" their brand.

See, I told you that you'd get a lot of opinions on this. Me, I don't know for sure but I feel better using the recommended oil.

I've been using used french fry oil from Hardees. Works great, gotta keep shaking the tank to keep it mixed though. Maybe I'll add a little degreaser to the tank. This should help to keep it fluid in cold temperatures.

Ever notice that the Walmart bottle is identical to the Penzoil bottle?

walmart probably buys their oil off a brand name manufacturer. This is VERY VERY common among discount brands. Name brands you pay for the advertising and the name. The oil itself is very cheap!

pep boys futura brand tires are made by dunlop. The tires are nearly identical, except the one says futura and costs half as much.

that being said I use only mercury quicksilver lower unit and 2 stroke oil.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

I have been using Wal-Mart oil from day one on my 175HP Rudies. The dealer where I bought the motors actually told me to get the Wal-Mart oil. He said, "its as good as any other brand out there". So I have been using it since 1998 with (0) problems. No engine repairs of any kind. I go thru 30 gallons a year, what a savings!!!

Wal-mart isn't the only one that gets their oil from a brand name manufacturer. So does Merc, OMC, and Yamaha. None of them make or blend their own oil.

Dave

Just a quick opinion on this. I used this off brand
in my 75 hp. chrysler, seemed to burn cleaner, than
other brands I used. Pennsoil being the worst.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

I think it would be interesting if someone could do an oil taste-test so to speak.

Pour a teaspoon of each into different containers. Set the oil on fire. See which one burns the fastest, which one produces the most smoke, and which one leaves the most residue. I'm not sure if the oil will burn very well on its own so maybe it would have to be mixed with some gasoline.

I am not sure what the results would tell you but I think it would be interesting.

PS I know this isn't the safest thing to do so if anyone decides to do it be careful! Don't use paper cups and make sure there is nothing around to catch on fire!

Wal-Mart's SuperTech oil is blended and bottled by Pennzoil-Quaker State.

I've always used Pennzoil and Lubrimatic oils without a problem in both my 110 Johnny and my 40 merc. A TC-W3 rating is all that matters!

I used the Wall Mart oil for years with no ill effects - as stated above I think the main difference is the marketing. By the way if you have a Sam's club in your area they have Quicksilver oil for $5.00 a gallon.

I just recently bought Lubrimatic 2 cycle outboard oil. Anyone know if that is any good?? It is TCW3 certified.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

If the oil comes from the same ground, goes through the same tanks at the same refineries (with the same additives), meeting the same standards, could the biggest difference between the "manufacturers" brand and "Walmart" brand be THE PRICE MARKUP?

Just a thought.
