Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

On my newer motors I use the mfgs oil. On my older motors it is anything that is tcw rated...usually WalMart which used to have Havoline TM marks on the white gal jugs. Opinions on this are wide and usually backed by seat o the pants testing. Even experienced mechanics contradict each other. For me, I keep engines a long time and they don't seem to mind the cheap oil. I decarb too.

Also, I don't remember the name but there is a law in this country that prevents companies from making you use a specified brand of oil to keep the warranty. I went though this about 2 yrs ago on a car motor. Nobody tells you this but the
aftermarket guys know it.

$5 per gallon for Quiksilver at Sam's Club?!?! There's a marina near me that is asking $6.89 per QUART of that stuff. You should have seen the look on the guy's face when I asked him if he was serious! He told me "yeah, that's the going price for that oil" (as if to insinuate that his price was competitive).

Of course, with all the K Marts going under around the country, NOW would be a good time to go out and snag all the premium brand outboard oil they have on the shelves at 70 percent off ... should bring it down to about what wal mart charges for the stuff, lol

Way way WAY "back in the day", my great grandfather swore that straight thirty wieght oil was all you needed, mixed "a little heavier". His 25 to one mixture smoked a bit, but damned if the old man didnt make it back every time! Are you ancient outboarders listening? (DO NOT try this trick on a new one, the tolerances are too tight and they run way too hot, but the old timers, the 50's smudge pots, well, why not? - besides sludge, pollution and everyone knowing where your favorite fishing hole is via smoke signals! :) )

Keep It Simple ... FYI guys, west marine stores are having a memorial weekend sale. THey have west marine brand TCW3 2cycle outboard oil for 7.99 a gallon. Not too shabby considering they sell the quicksilver for 22.99 a gallon.

I gave in to my stuck up self with brand names and bought a case of it.

I remember being told that some two-cycle motors used to be run using castor oil.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

Hey John, you are right castor oil was used, but there was a little "IF" in there. In racing hydroplanes which used to be a big thing, they fueld them with alcohol, castor oil, and nitro I believe. I was a young one in the 40's when we would go down to the riverbank on holidays and watch the hydroplane races, and you could really smell the castor oil in the air. I doubt if they ever mixed the castor oil with gasoline although it is possible that they did. The thing about castor, is that it will not breakdown and burn at as low a temperature as oil. Also, when I was a teenager in the early 50's we used to go to the midget auto races on a paved 1/4 mile track, and a lot of them run Old Johnson outboard engines in the midget race cars. :D :D :D

Castor oil should work for a hotter running, air-cooled engine, then. Not to say I'd use it, though; not with modern oils around.

I've got a gallon of it. I buy it by the gallon and spray it diluted on my lawn as a mole repellent. Works good.

Is the Bombardier 2 Stroke XD25 above and beyond the minimum TC-W3 rating?

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

John...almost any TCW-3 oil will say on the bottle that it meets or exceeds the TCW-3 rating. Just adding a little more additive "X" will make make it a true statement. I, personnally, believe that any company that puts there name on an engine would want a quality oil to market. I am a Johnny/Rude dealer but would have no qualms about running a Merc, Yamaha or Suzuki oil in either of my engines. It just boils down, in my opinon, to the care you give your engine. The better you treat it, the better it will treat you.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

It stands to reason that some folks may exceed the TC-W3 minimum is several ways, creating a superior product. If, say, Penzoil mixes the blend for Wal-mart's oil, Wal mart may give instructions to blend the formula so as to just meet the TC-W3 rating in order to cut costs. But the oil with Penzoil's name on it may greatly exceed the TC-W3 minimum. I don't know if that's the case, it's just an example. Your oil may be superior to another's TC-W3 if the other's oil just meets the TC-W3 criteria. Bomb may have a desire for their oil to be the best it possibly can.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

The cheapest way to get a TC-W3 from the refinery, would be to buy an already existing product/formula, not to have one specially made.

BTW, Sam's around here don't have the Quicksilver. They have Pennzoil in a 12 qt/ 3gal case, for $22. Walmart is across the parking lot with their SuperTech for $5.98 a gallon.

Re: Wal-mart Outboard Motor Oil

My thought is that if the manufacturer recommends an oil meeting TCW-3 standards, why waste your money buying one that exceeds this standard? If the manufacturer wanted you to use an oil that exceeds TCW-3, I presume they would say so. What the heck do I know, though. I too, used to run straight 30 weight oil mixed 16 to 1 in the good old days past. :>)

Walmart has the same additive pack as Pennzoil, however as the food chain goes:
Walmart has "X" amount of additive
Pennzoil has "X" amount + of the same additive
Pennzoil Marine has "X" amount ++ of the same additve.
I cannot reveal the additive or the additive rates because I work for Pennzoil-Quaker

One could suppose that the additive "x" was the
size of the numbers after the $, but that would
be cynical

:) :) :)

Mrc
