I am hoping someone can help me out!
My 2001 Merc 25 2 cycle was running fine then stalled throttling up. After it stalled I could only start it with the primer knob pulled all the way out. It barely idled and smoked like crazy. Could not throttle up.
I've since changed the gas, disassembled the carb, cleaned with carb cleaner (didn't see any varnish or dirt) checked the plugs (wet...)
I got it to idle w/o the primer pulled by backing out the main/idle needle a half turn but it still smokes badly.
Any one know what going on and how to fix it?

Thanks- Jeff

.Sounds like you overlooked the primer side of that carb job.If that is allowed to run amok your symptoms will occur.

Hondon- Your right! I didn't take the primer apart.
I didn't realize it was part of the normal fuel circuit. I'm not clear on how it's causing this but I'll clean it too and try again.
Thanks.

I disassembled the primer and sprayed it out. Doesn't seem to have "fixed" the problem. It does idle a bit better and can now idle w/o the primer pulled if allowed to warm up. Motor starves for fuel. Still smokes bad when throttled up. Planning to launch boat run it at higher RPMs to try to clean it out...

I've cleaned this carb three times. Motor will not idle unless primed right before it stalls, sometimes quickly squeezing the bulb will keep it going. I'm begining to suspect the fuel pump although I had it apart to clean and didn't see anything torn. Any ideas for testing it? Bowl always has gas in it when I tear it down...
Thanks- Jeff

Are you sure it's not overheating ?
Smoking and rough idling are also symptons of that.
What is the temperature of the water from the telltale ?

I'm pretty sure it's not overheating. Once a steady stream comes out, its hot but not scalding. The smoke has decreased to normal. Not sure if this is due to cleaning the primer circuit or new gas. I just tried a portable tank w/ a new hose/bulb- same results. :-(
