TILT TRIM PROBLEM

Bought an old boat with a 1991 3 cylinder 60 HP Mercury. Ser # ODO69958. Relief valve was missing from tilt pump housing. Replaced relief valve and filled unit with fluid. Motor spins in both directions but will not extend hydraulic cylinder. Shaft drive seats well in motor and in pump and spins pump well. It's like fluid is not getting into the cylinder. Any ideas on what I should try next to narrow down the problem?

Thanks

Re: TILT TRIM PROBLEM

There may still be air in the system. Mercury has a procedure for filling with fluid and removing air. I don't know what it is though. Should be in the manual.

c/6

Hooty

Re: TILT TRIM PROBLEM

Open relief valve, tilt the motor up as far as it will go ,lock the motor up with the cam, close the relief valve, remove the fill screw & fill with fluid until level with the fill hole, replace the fill screw, lift motor (you may have to do this manually)& unlock cam , cycle up & down a few times ,job done ,the system is self bleeding :D
