Having trouble with my 1979? Mercury 850 Thunderbolt motor cutting out on me. Orginally thought it was a fuel problem but seemed to have ruled that out. I thought a bad coil but have heard the coils on these motors are very reliable. Have also heard that the ignitor can cause problems. This problem can happen at high speeds and at idle once the engine is hot.

Any suggestions?

Re: 79? Mercury 850 Thunderbolt ignition problem

Welcome to iboats.
You state that "it is cutting out". It runs ok until warm, and then, stalls...
This could be a coil. Coils do this-- when at normal temps, a coil with an open winding will function perfectly. This is because the broken ends are touching each other. But as the coil heats up and expands, the windings expand to, and the two ends are seperated. It will fail until it cools down again....Can drive ya buggy (I know)..I hate intermittant failures. they tend to make me cuss.
It could be a stator or trigger winding for the same reason.(they have coils of wire in them) It could be the cd unit too. You'll need a good volt/ohm meter, and the manual, because it gets into pages of model-specific stuff here.
Check the coils when the engine stalls, (across the winding) You should get between 100-500ohms. Any more, and the winding has break in it, Any less, and the winding is shorting on itself (burnt up).
But you're right, they are some of the best-made, best protected coils in the marine industry (IMHO).

Re: 79? Mercury 850 Thunderbolt ignition problem

I plan to take it out this weekend and test the coil to confirm this is not the problem. If it is the coil, how much time is need for it to cool down? It seems to restart in a few minutes and than dies again after 5 mins of use. I have heard from a dealer that it could also be the trigger winding but from what I understand that is a lot more expense.

Thanks for the help...

Take a spark tester with you. It could be fuel-related, and we need to rule that out.
A clogged tank vent or ttank pickup will act like this too. It will run great until the pump cannot overcome the vacuum any more. It will stall, then, as the air slowly leaks into the tank, it releives the vacuum, and off you go. Test this by unscrewing the gas cap, and note the condition of the primer bulb.

A fuel problem was my first thought as well, but I think I have ruled that out. I have replaced the primer bulb, the diaphragm on the fuel pump, cleaned the entire fuel system and preformed tests with a different gas tank from the 50 Merc on my pontoon boat.

I have moved on to troubleshooting electrical problems. I wish it would just quit instead of it being intermittent.
