I have a 1966 Merc 65HP that I am restoring.
I have a question regarding the color the powerhead and cowling brackets are supposed to be. mine are a painted aluminum color. The brakets are made of cast aluminum, so it doesn't make sense that they would be painted. Are the ones on your engine painted this silver color?

Yo 12 footer, all the mercs ive ever worked on were totally black except for the suicide motors that were white. Paint it black and you cant go wrong :D

Thanks Rod, and I know what you mean, but i never took notice of the blocks of a motor of this vintage. It's silver, and looks factory-painted. The reason I say it looks factory painted is, the crankcase still has the lead seals stamped "Kikaefer" in place, and they are not painted, nor is the wire (that passes thru the hole from the led tag).
I'm tempted to just clean it up, because the paint is flawless on the powerhead itself.
at the same time, all the aluminum cast pieces that suround it (to support the cover) are also painted this same color.
Do you think it might have just been skillfully painted silver? I'm with ya on the white or black. but it just looks factory-done, and wanted someone with a simular year/ vintage to go look at thier motor, and see if it was the same.

I dont know the answer to that...? Maybe we could look it up on midas and find the factory colors used on that engine. Only problem is they wont tell you where they were used. Maybe someone else will know.

Thnanks W2J. That describes this one to a tee, and for the most part, answers all my questions. But I'm still curious of one thing..The cover support bracket pieces are aluminum, but are they painted aluminum, or just bare-polished aluminum?
Thanks.

Go look out on Ebay.... Do a search for merc outboards in "outboard motors and parts". They have pages of older mercs for sale. Click on the pictures. I am sure you will find a few that look just like yours. A lot of Kikauefer(no spellin wiz) motors and parts out the in vintage original condition. Heck you may even end up buying something.
