Back when i was a kid i spent one summer building a small (9 ft) hydroplane and i had an 18 hp motor called a hurricane that i think was made by merc. well so happens, many many years later the boat is still around but the motor is long gone, and i was wondering if anyone knew of a comparable motor that could be used?

Re: small racing motor

Hi Flashback,
The motor you speak of is likely a Mercury Super 10 Hurricane, model KG7H. It came with a Quicksilver racing lower unit and shortened mid-section. It could have also been a KG7Q which used a standard length mid-section with an open exhaust. At 20-cubic inches it made approx. 18hp, even though it was rated at 10hp. It's slightly smaller sibling, the Rocket Hurricane, model KG4H came in at 15-cubic inches. Any one of them was capable of launching a small sea-flea over the water at high speed.
Those motors are now quite scarce, having been run hard and put away wet. I've gotten lucky and have found a few "out of the woodwork" motors by placing ads in my local papers. It helps to be a bit of a mech and have some bloodhound in you to track down parts, etc. They turn up on eBay from time to time, but look out - they're VERY pricey.
For about what you'd pay for a nice vintage Merc racer, you can pick up a brand new Merc racer based off the stock 15hp fishing motor. Check out www.apba.org for more information...
- Scott Chinewalker's Place

Wow Chinewalker, thanks for the info, I feel sure the kg7h is what it was. noisy little devil, dogone boat would do about 60 mph. used to scare the bejesus out of me.. Im not looking for a vintage motor in particular as i don't want to race the boat in sanctioned races. merc is currently converting the 15 hp motor for racing?
